couple of possibilities - pinched wires - that eventually shorted...
knocked off the heat transfer pads that fit between the BA chips and the metal plate making it overheat and eventually fry.
When you opened and closed it - pinched the reset cable...
you didn't adjust the laser did you?
A small hiarline short on a chip leg from solder splash...
either way sounds like now a fuse is blown or one of the chips / cd drive is blown...

When the tray comes out REALLY slowly, I think it is the BA58 chip. This can be located at the top left of the PS2 main board (depending on how you look at it). If you have a multimeter there, put one end on pin8 of the BA58 and one pin on the ground (outer orangy/brass coloured areas). If you get a reading from this, it means the BA58 is fried, also check for bridges on the bios and check the BA66 chip.
Hope this helps :D
PS. I know this can be very frustrating at times, but do NOT give up, I just went through a tedios DMS3 install, which eventually worked. If you want to check out my review click here
Hope you get your PS2 fixed ;)
