    Hi I'm helping a friend of mine's mod his v4 ps2.

I would like to know if it is possible to complete the job with a .7 mm soldering tip.

My local Radioshack doesn't carry anything smaller than that :/

If your going to use the alternate CD/DVD decoder points, then that tip should be ok. But if your going to solder wires directly to the decoder chip, then the tip is way too big.
If you use the alternate points, then just be a bit careful around the bios points.

the cd/dvd chip requires pro and i mean pro skillz.. if you have any problems with it i highly recommend just handing it off to a mod installer such as myself..

Okay so far, I've installed the DMS3 modchip and I have all the wires connected except for the 9 CD/DVD Controller wires.

I am certain that there aren't any problems with my install so far, because, I booted my ps2 up and there were no problems. I was able to play ps2 originals, etc. And when I held the triangle button during boot up, the PS2 boots directly to the browser screen in attempt to boot into Dev. mode.

Now I just have the 9 wires left to tackle.
I'm thinking of soldering the alternative points on the vias.
But before I do that, I would REALLY APPRECIATED if someone could give me a few pointers on soldering to vias. I already read charlie's guide (about 1000 times).

But before I do anything, is there anything I should know that would greatly reduce my chances of screwing up?

(BTW, I'll probably do a few test points on the vias of my old pc modem card)

    MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!!!

Well, I would do that, except the fact that:

    (1) The local stores in my area/city are incredibly stupid.
    (2) They charge $60 w/o modchip.
    (3) Most of them won't even consider chipping ur ps2, unless you use their "preferred" modchip. "like magic, etc."

So in my situation, I can only rely on myself and the help from you awesome peeps on this "god-blessed" forum.

you should also test each via with a multimeter.. touch the via to the leg on the cd/dvd chip to see if you have a good connection

Thanks guys, but I just finished installing the DMS3 chip and I've connected the wires to the vias on the bottom of the motherboard. (using the original alt.3 diagrams from DMS).

Everything seems to be working correctly except about every 3-5 boots, I get a scenario where my ps2 seems to boot the disc half-way and then just simply stops and returns me to the BROWSER screen.

And also, I noticed that in the main screen where it says:
    BROWSER and SYS CONFIGURATION,
there used to be a circle thats constantly moving. Now theres nothing but a blob of blue color stuck there. :/

Anyways, I think everything else is correct though.
    Thanks alot guys.
