Which chip do you have? Is your USBHDD formated in FAT32? NTSF won't work.
Try starting USBA with the chip disabled, then you'll know if your chip is causing the problems.
If that doesn't work too, then your USBHDD is not compatible with USBA.

If USBA just boots up to a black screen, try and set Macrovision to off on your modchip,if your using a modern one(MI,DMS4,CC ect..)....

Again: Which chip do you have?
If you could tell us which chip you have, then someone can probably tell you howto to disable macrovision, or howto disable the chip to use your original hdextreme.

All you have to do is disabling the chip. Then your PS2 will act like unmodded and your original CD will work fine again. But I don't know if that's possible with the crappy modbo. Or get a good original chip like CC or MI and you will be definitely be able to use your HDextreme again, cause that chips can be disabled.
Maybe someone else can tell you how to disable the modbo, but I think it works the same way like disabling a MI.

Unfortunatly modbo 530 doesnt allow you to the change settings on it(example disableing macrovision off),so your pretty much stuck with it,the closest thing you can do is like Jones23 says disable the chip, simply hold down "select" on your controle when turning on your PS2 and then the chip will be disabled, that is if you have a origenal disc....

    Why:

Usbadvance wont boot on Matrix Infinity(or its clones) based chips if "Disable Macrovision"is set to "on",and you cant change it on a modbo 530...
