The NVRAM data is being read wron g by the PS2, probably due to solder splaters or broken tracks in the mobo.
Funny enough, I was talking with someone yesterday at #PS2-Emulation about this very topic.
And the problems of corrupted NVRAM data are just the ones you tell here .... Since it worked after you messed a bit in it, then it's definitely a motherboard damage problem.
You would like to take a look on the NVRAM chip. it's in the middle of the board at the same side as the EE and GS chip.
An V3/V4/V5/V6 NVRAM chip has this written on it :
(c) 2000 SCEI
C807U-2A69
If it's V1/V2 :
(c) 2000 SCEI
C807U-1V33
and keep noticed that the chip is not only a NVRAM, it does also control the power supply, the reset/eject button and also the fan and monitor the Emotion Engine chip temperature.
