What I do is just cut a portion of the mush-pad they use for the various chips under the dvd-rom [v4-7 only I think] and stick it between the chip and the metal plate...and I never have problems. Some systems might be more problematic, esp since they definately use more than one PSU board (diff temps).
I'm guessing all a magic really needs is a small aluminum plate bonded to the SMD chip's top and air flow past it.

i got a heatsync and a fan. gonna install it in a while. kinda tired right now. i also picked up a switch for the chip.. not planning to install it just yet.. until someone knows exactly how to do it
