H2O, ground question

Just a quick question.

I have looked at the diagram that is provided on the official H2O website and looked at other peoples boards and I have seen that they use another point as ground (see attached image)

I was wandering do I need to scrach the orange surface off before soldering or do I just solder it on top of the orange surface?

Scratch them then solder to them.
