So is it possible to have CD-R copies of the Linux Kit for PS2, a memory card for Linux, a regular computer IDE drive, and a PS2 compatible USB keyboard and mouse, and use Linux on it instead of using the Linux Kit provided hard drive? I would then be interested in getting a Linux Kit. Thanks!

Uh.. Yeah. I use a backup of my original PS2 Linux kit on CDR from which I removed the DVD check so that I can boot with it instead of using the original 'rare' DVDs (only the bootup (RTE) part is on it, not the install part). I'm doing this because Sony won't replace them when they are damaged. Note though that it are DVDs, not CDs.. Both should fit on one DVD though but I've never tried since I've got the original.

Basically what you are status is true to some point yes.. But only on a modified PS2. When the PS2 is modified with say a messiah you can also access all CDs/DVDs (except for CD audio I think).

So the Linux Kit set is actually 2 DVD's and not 2 CD's?

That's not a problem though, I have a DVD Burner, just wanted to know what medium they were so I could do that.

I just thought the Linux HDD with the kit was specially formatted so you couldn't use a regular hard drive on it. But that would be awesome. Any pre-formatting tools needed, or do you just insert an unformatted drive and the Linux Kit does it for ya?

Thanks sparc, I love what you're doing, don't give up, ps2newz avidly supports development in the ps2 scene, and this is just one major obstacle that would be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow if anyone ever cracked it. So thanks for your time!

The HDD 'firmware' check in Games (I'm assuming it exists right now) is in the HDD driver.. Basically if that driver is cracked it should work on all HDDs.. I could do those things in the old DOS days but lost track of those things. Basically with a disassembler it should very much be possible to track down the detection routine. I don't know if I'm still up to it though.. Perhaps I'll give it a try after doing some more tests on the official HDD in my PAL PS2 when the BB Navigator disc arrives..

Regarding the Linux kit. It does no 'firmware' check on the HDD and any HDD is detected (at least it's here). Basically you can even burn CDRs/DVDs with your PS2 if you connect a burner to it through an IDE cable.. It's pretty much very basic and simple to do.. If it is any use other than showing off is the question.. If you don't have a modchip connecting an external CD/DVD drive however will allow you to read all CDs/DVDs (in Linux).

That is awesome! Once I get my cable internet back, I'll try and get an ISO of the two Linux discs and try it out with a PS2 keyboard and I'll try and find a PS2 compatible mouse. Thanks!

With the driver, are you talking about the 'module' hdd.irx (??, don't have time to look up the name) on the CD/DVD or the one on the memory card ? If it's in the 'module' it should be easy to crack..

sparc, indeed it is HDD.IRX, i've got something to ask you, where can i get this 'IDE' Cable, As my STANDARD PC IDE cable doesn't go into my ps2, i have 2 other HDDs and those don't fit on my ps2, thus making me wonder what kind of IDE cable you use.... as i can't live with a 1.6GB HDD forever!
btw, heres a tip on booting the BB Navigator without Linux so it wouldn't detect your mod if you'd like to know, i know this works on ASIAN/NTSC ps2s, but pal can read ntsc movies so it may work.
Start Your PS2 in PSX Mode With BB Navigator In, Eject While The Main Screen Is On, Go Into Browser, Now Eject Again, You Will Get A RED SCREEN OF DEATH, Now Quickly Eject And Once You See The Tray Coming Out (At The Least) Press Eject Again, Now Go Into Browser And Select Playstation 2 Disc.
I Learnt this trick to boot sony software with NONSWAP mods in PSX mode, i can say it works 100% on my NTSC J unit and i don't see why it shouldn't work on a U/C or PAL unit... BUT NTSC J units will not start pal games this way...

It depends on the IDE cable.. Normally you should be able to fit it on. If it doesn't fit, 'shave' something off the connector.. Be sure to fasten the 'screws' good enough since there will a bit more space between the ethernet adapter and the PS2 than normally is the case. Also it might be smart to use an external powersupply in case the PS2 PSU can't handle two drives if you plan on doing this.

I've read about the method you described.. I don't see why it should work (with my Messiah chip) actually since I need to set the needed disc type with the reset button. I also have an 10000 JAP series PS2 with SWAPMOD but no HDD interface thingy for it.. I'll give it a try though.. According to GameChoice Club where I ordered the DVD it should take between 7 - 15 days to arrive.. It's been around 5 days now so I'll probably have to wait a little longer ;-(

So you can use a standard IDE cable to connect the PS2 to the HDD? And will the PS2 power one HDD, or do you need to have some sort of external supply regardless?
Also, is a 3 GB HDD enough to install the Linux kit on? It's all I have at my house leftover right now. Thanks!
