I just got this PS2 broken and put it to work some days ago. It's still unmoded (It was using a crappy neo2, which I proptly removed. Also was it which killed it's original laser btw)
After getting the set to work, I decided to use it to test some laser units I was fixing, and the damn PS2 changed it's original configuration for the small stepper motor which controls the mechanism laser/spindle azimuth. ("White COG")

Now the machine only read DVDs properly when I set "Diagnosis" on at the menu. The PS2 commands the motor for a proper white cog adjust while the diagnosis option is on.
Doesn't matter if I put a new or old laser, as every time I press the reset switch the PS2 moves the adjust into a wrong position again.

Now the question ... Is there anyway to make the PS2 automatically adjust the white cog position while "Diagnosis" is on and then make it memorize this adjust for don't need turning diagnosis option ON every time I want to run a DVD on it (All originals or movies. It's NOT moded right now)

    (Edit, some details added)

No, I mean a small stepper motor that does automatic adjusting on the white cog and only exists on V1 and V2 units (Maybe in V3 too, but I'm not sure... )

I'm sure newer units had this removed for cost saving. Still it is making my machine unstable for DVD discs, unless I get to restore it's original settings.

While I wait for a answer, I am doing my own research and figured out where the PS2 stores all settings. It seems the configuration NVram is inside the chip that controls power on/off
    (C807U-1V33 for V1 and C807U-2A69 for v2 and newer)

It seems to contain the configuration data for everything on the console and maybe it also stores this adjust data. If it was a V4 it was going to be a simple matter of moving the white cog, btw ...
