Hello everybody, I'm new here, and planning to purchase a mod-chip for my PS2.

First off, do u have any recommandations? I'm willing to spend $30 on a mod-chip.

And what is the difference between the expensive ones like the Matrix Infinity or DMS4, and the cheap ones like the DUO or Neo12, etc?

    I have a normal PS2, I think it's a 50009 (something involves 9 lol), so I won't need the slim compatible feature.

Matrix infinity/dms4/crystal chip all can be upgraded, updates come from time to time and its nice to have the latest code. Dms4 Pro has a 2mb flash on the chip, you can store applications on this which can be launched on the ps2. They have better booting reliability. They use Actel intergrated circuits which is high quality.. some of the cheap mods use lower quality components. Matrix infinity boots all your stuff automaticly, the cheaper chips make you hold buttons down to boot certain media.. I recommend spend a little extra bucks you will be glad you did down the road when you get more in tuned with the ps2 hacking scene. If your going to mod the v9 yourself be sure you know what your doing. Also dont forget the romeo mod to protect the LA chip.

    Upgrade? Thru what? Software?

What is the romeo mod? Is it necessary?

I'm not sure if I have the v9 yet, the PS2 is at a friend's house, I'll have to check later. I bought it 1 and half years ago tho.

And I'm sure the cheaper ones work just as well right?

I wouldn't bother buying cheap chips, it's not a big difference anyway
imo get either a Matrix Infinity or a Crystal Chip (MI is best choice imo)

there is modbo2 out now, its said clone of matrix infinity but very cheap. if you just want to play backups (don't care about flashing, upgrade, etc), any chip will just fine.

Exactly, it's not a big difference! Yet they are $30 cheaper! Why not?

I have heard this chinese unit only accepts this chinese clone called a blue messiah or something. I dont know of any other 50009 silver ps2 modchips.

Alright, so I actually have a 50001 console, and it's V9 version, since it doesn't have the 3D mark on the bottom (mine is 3C).

Now, I'll just be using this chip to play some backup games...I don't really need any other features.

So, help me to decide among these 3:

    Duo 2 SE
    ModBo v1.1
    Apollo 7

    Cast ur votes guys!

You have V9, go with MODBO2, cause modbo2 should better than modbo v1.1, but is up to you.

I heard the Duo 2 SE is the best out of those 3, so I'm getting that one.

Is there a complete guide somewhere that demostrates how to open a PS2 case?
