Gameshark won't work

I just bought a Gameshark 2 for my PS2, The only way the gameshark will load is if I boot it in miniminal/sleep mode, but it won't let me load any cheats, it just says "disk read error" when I put the back-up game in, is their anyway around this? Thanks.

I guess Crystal Chip doesn't support Gameshark... I know Matrix Infinity does.
