That's quite a long name for a modchip
Even though it isn't actually a modchip

My question is does this thing really do what it says it does?
    I saw it for only £ 34.95
They say it does all this:

The PS2 flip top is the latest, and best in the long line of PS2 no-solder mods. Very easy to install, and taking just 5 minutes - you will soon be able to play CD-R, DVD-R backups and imports. Currently the flip-top lid is undetectable by software as a mod chip. Very little risk to the console, as no scex signals are sent, laser wear therefore is reduced. Packages INCLUDES a set of Swap Magic V2 disks (CD-R & DVD-R). Suitable for V4 - V8 console.

    Simple Loading Instructions.
Press eject and place the boot disk in the tray
Press reset and wait until the message "insert disc" appears
Lift the flip top lid and replace boot disk with backup/import
Press X on the control pad

    The game will now load

Well if it does that why would I buy a expensive chip like Messiah 2 or DMS3 2.0?

    Thank in advance

The problem with it is it won't boot everything. It won't boot dvd rips. The messiah 2 boots everything. I'm very happy with my messiah 2. Don't know about the DMS3 2.0.

My DMS3 boots EVERYTHING. DVD originals, DVD backups, CD originals and CD backups. I haven't seen or tried any DVD9's but I am guessing that they will work too. I have not had one problem with my DMS3 (no RSOD, no hanging black screen, no game freezes, etc). The DMS3 is the only chip that I have ever used and I am very happy with it.

but it says it does play DVD-R backups
Read the red text and there it is stated it playes both cd backup and dvd backups

So does anyone have any experience with this ...thing?

Arrrrrrrrrr, there be a difference between DVD-rip and DVDr. A rip is a DVD game that has been chopped up and put into a file that is 800 mb or smaller so it can fit onta one CDr. Yon flippy lids WILL NOT play those, games...also they will only work with 60%-70% of games that ye back up as well.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know.

My problem is that I'm not sure if I would mess up my PS2 or not.
I've got one but I think it's broken, it's got an old Neo chip (not sure which one though)

But it doesn't work well anymore. It has some (read a LOT) trouble reading cd's. So when I boot AR2 it has trouble reading it. And after that booting a game it won't even load anymore. And it'll make a LOT of noise, spinning the cd and I even had a cd burned because of it.

This all happend when I played Enter The Matrix (original) and when my ps2 was standing up it fell (NOOOOOOOoooo...) and so my missery began.

I think it's broken so I wanted te buy a new one and install a DMS3 2.0 or messiah but as I said before I'm not sure I can install this myself, not very technical. My dad is but I don't think he know's how to work with a 'modern' ps2. He worked with old TV's 30 years ago or somehing....

    Any help is welcome.

Go with Bill at www.freedomlives.com he is an AWESOME and very well respected installer. He will talk to you in person before he does the work, and he will have it back to you in no time at all. I have done several installs and repairs from him and have been more than pleased with his service everytime.

It boots DVD rips.....where did you get the idea that it didn't?
The only prob is its limited to game >630MB and DVD >4.3GB
So if you got the money to spend on a chip and get it installed......thats your best bet!

Yea but it'll cost me $60 and I have to send it to the US (I live in Europe) so that'll cost me a bundle.
And I have to have a new ps2 anyway because mine is wasted.

Isn't just better for me to buy one with a chip installed?
