First install, so far no good

We'll after 8 sweaty hours modding my ps2, I finally tried it out and nothing. Originals play but no backups. I actually have a headache and my eyes are killing but there's a possibily that a post may be connected to another considering that there's little to no space to solder.

Tomorrow I may look at it again, but im pretty sure everything is ok. I used 30 aug wire for the points and 22 for the +5 and ground.
BTW I installed a Duo in a V2 ps2.

Also do you guys think it can be a laser problem maybe? I bought this second hand in it had an old gameshark chip in it so that may have worn the chip out on it. I also tried 4 dvd movies (originals) and it only read 2 successfully :S

So this is kind of worrying me, maybe I shouldn't have touched it in the first place, what would you guys do in a situation like this?

For me, making the job possible in the first place required a signficant financial outlay. Anyone that can solder without some sort of magnification gets my appreciation. My vision isn't 20/20 to start with so I couldn't do it without a illuminated magnifier. Same goes for using a cheap soldering iron. I bought a Weller station and having the tip stay at the correct temp when working is a huge improvement. The other tools you hear mentioned all make the job easier.

The point I'm making is that having the right tools helps a lot. Unless you plan of selling your services at some point then this is not a realistic option but it is a fact. That's why it's worth considering sending your ps2 to a reputable modder.

Next thing you should do is take the chip off and test again. If it's still faulty then look for bridged (shorted) contacts where you did your soldering. The pros here can probably tell you what lines would affect laser reading.

If it's that old and heavily used, it is probably worth your while cleaning the lens anyway. They become opaque with crud over the years and a cotton bud is all you need to clean them off. There's walk-throughs available here somewhere.

If it works okay then it was your install. Most of the time (from reading here) this is the problem. Try, try, try again.

Anyway... the outlay I made was justified as my first worked first time (dms3). I was probably more shocked than anyone.

no it's not your install sometime you need to adjust the laser a little bit to play backup.

I agree. From what I have read, anything older than a version 4 has very poor lasers anyways. Hopefully cleaning it will help, but if not, get in there and adjust the height of the laser with the cog wheel. It might take a while, but after spending 8 hours on it, probably just a drop in the bucket.

first, the backup disc. is this a known working copy?
when you put it in the ps2, does it give you a RSOD or does it just go back to the browser screen after trying to boot? if it gives you a RSOD, it may be the install.

if it just sorta does nothing, then try putting your ps2 in the vertical position, or even upside down after the tray is closed. if it reads, then it is your laser.

thanks guys. I just cleaned the laser and before I put it back together I want to check all points with a good magnifier. ibod where can I get one of those magnifiers b/c I went to 5 stores and none had them.

Sorry to the other questions, I tried a working PS1 backup I had from my ps1 which works 100%. I never tried tilting the ps2 but i guess i'll give that a try. I get no BSOD screen, it just goes straight to the dashboard screen. Originals still work though.

Are ther certain boot methods with this chip or is it a boot from browser?

Law, yes there's specific procedures to boot backups. I followed the ones on the Duo site. I tested a cd-r backup and it says to insert the game and reset the station and have the button held down until the blue light comes on which I tried doing and nothing.

I would also try powering up the PS2 put the game in, power down ps2 and power up again. Sounds strange but might work.
