failed Romeo mod on v9
I resently got a PS2 from a guy who tried to mod it himself!
Insted of connecting 5 volt to the 17 leg of the LA-chip he did it on the 16 leg.
It cant read any disk. not even orginal. But its booting just fine
I have tried taking the chip out an reconnecting the LA-chip to the board, but its still the same.
The coils on the laser is measuring 5.2 and 5.5 ohms.
Could the laser have been burned? and maybe the LA-chip to??
pin 16 is a "mute" signal, which comes from the V9's mechacon - when the PS2 is first turned on, this signal is asserted to prevent volts from going into the laser coil until the mechacon is ready.
Connecting this signal to 5V probably damaged the output pin on the mechacon, which now means that the LA6508 is constantly muted.
Try connecting the pin to ground, so that the LA6508 is always enabled... **BUT FIRST**, do the summ0ne fix on the console to limit the current through the laser coils. Otherwise, the PS2 will likely blow its coils when it first starts up.
Damn gee... good answer. Love learning new things.
Now as you can see on the attached file, i grounded the 16 leg.
I also did the summone fix.
But now the problem is that i wont eject. the buttom is just flashing when i press it..
It's still booting the main screen..
Any ideas now Mr. Gee??
Sounds like your LA is toast and needs to be replaced.
I've done the same myself. I was pretty wasted when I did the mod, so the 5V landed on pin 16. My coils are gone. I'm now waiting a replasement-laser and LA6508RII. But do I have to do the romeo-mod now?
I have made the repair.. I just replaced the LA6508 with a LA6508RII.. and the PS8 fuse was blown too..
And now its works like a charm..!
