Failed Magic 3 install, HELP!!!!
Failed Magic 3 install, HELP!!!! –
02-08-2003,03:06 PM
Hi,
I tried to install a Magic 3 modchip (on a V5), but screwed it up. I have now removed it and the PS2 will turn on, but there is no CD/DVD activity (won't even eject and no blue LED) and the screen is blank. I have checked all of the fuses and they appear fine. I can't find any shorts (even looked using a microscope at work designed for surface mount installation). I was wondering if the BA5815 chip has died, but is there a simple way to tell? Or maybe I fried the BIOS. Does anyone have any ideas? Also if anyone has a V5 mainboard for sale or can help me please contact me.
Thanks
Acestes

You say it turns on but you don't get the blue light?
Do you get the red light?
If you don't you may find that you have damged the silver cable between the case Reset buttons and the MB - i.e. this cable connects to the buttons and if it is stuffed you will not be able to boot the station - i.e. no reset or eject - not station start...
hopefully it is that simple otherwise you may have blown a few hard or impossible to replace parts.

Hi
You say the fuses haven't gone?, have you checked all 13 of the PS fuses especially the PS11 fuse by the BA5815 chip?.
A way to check if the BA5815 chip has gone is to look on top of the chip and find the dimple on top of it, that dimple denotes that pin on the chip is pin 1 and so count till you get to pin 8 on the chip (it will be the 1 after the long flat heatsink pin) which is linked directly to the fuse (PS11). Being that fuses protect the live side of things on the board this pin shouldnt be earthing to ground so take a multimeter select the 'continuity' reading on it and place one of the probes on pin 8 and the other to ground on the board, if the meter shows continuity or beeps meaning continuity then the chip has shorted. You can purchase a new BA5815 chip but the BA6664FM are much harder to find.

Shadowknyght:
The red light works, and it turns green when you press it, ie. it turns on. Also I have replacd the cable, just in case it was that, but no such luck
PS2Meister:
Yep all 13 fuses have been checked. I'm not sure if pin 8 is going to ground, I will check (the console is with a friend at the moment, so I won't be able to reply straight away, but as soon as I get it I will let you know) I know where I can get the BA5815 chip, but have no idea where to get the BA6664FM, any ideas?
Thanks for all your help.

According to Charlie_PS2 the BA5815 chip can blow without the fuse blowing on occasions. I have a V5 that doesn't eject and I get a blank screen, I have ordered my BA5815 chip from the US, couldn't source it from the UK where I am based and I also noticed the PS7 fuse had blown aswell as the PS11. I have replaced both of them now but haven't switched the machine on for obvious reasons. I know a place that sells the BA6664 chips but you need an account with them as they will only supply to smaller companies so it you think you could blag an account and order up a load of them by all means try. I'll send you the link if need be.

I will certainly be interested with your results once you put the new chip on
Also I have e-mailed you a link to a UK site selling the BA5815 chip, a little late now I'm sure, but it may help in the future.

Cheers mate!
Well I am going to cut thru the pins on the chip to get the thing off the board, the easiest way in my opinion as it's knackered anyway!, then just desolder all the legs left behind off the board.
I will let you know my results, the chip has definately shorted, as I say you wouldnt have a fuse on the earthed side of the board, fingers crossed. I blew mine using a tray switch install on my NEO 2.2 V5 as this chip didn't cater for EA swaps, I just happened to open the tray while the disc was still spinning up and thats what did the damage to my PS2.
Thanks for the link should be getting the chip very soon as it was well over a week ago that I ordered the chip. Hope you get yours sorted!
BY the way did you PM me that link or if not what email addy did you send it to?
