    Heya all,

I have got two ps2's (one v7 and one v9), both with a 400c laser and here's the thingy:

Both units play dvd originals fine, chipped or unchipped.
As soon as you put ANY(!) type of dvd or cd burned media in, the laser starts skipping and bouncing around like a fool. You hear the laser lens slapping against the media and the laser unit bounces against the zero point swich (sledmotor keeps going though)

I have never seen this before. This happens on both units. The weird thing is, it reads dvd originals like new (very fast detection). It also reads dvdr media in like a charm, but when it has initialized, the hell breaks loose. Swapping lasers with a brand new one doesn't help.

Used 4 types of chip, including modbo 2.1. All the same.

Seen many threads wich point out a similar problem, but this is happening on 2 different systems. The only thing wich is the same is the laser.

Checked soldering and everything is clean even behind the bios legs.

I'm clueless. Anyone have an idea??

Did some thinking.....The only similar solder points in both systems are the scex ,bios points and point a (black resistor).....

Can it have something to do with a faulty capacitor on the scex line wich causes bad instructions to the controller chip?
Or a bad resistor on point a?

I'm guessing the laser is bad, try it with a replacement laser and see how it goes...

What brand of dvd are you using and how fast are you burning the dvds?

You should use good brands such as ritek, taiyo yuden, or verbatim.

using only good quality verbatim media.

Lasers are in good condition and that is verified in other working systems.

Azimuth and cog are being ajusted just to have no effect.

It even reads originals wich are in bad shape and no skipping, only when a recordable is inserted.

    Already did that.

G-H-I pionts on backside are clean,

A point - resistor is still there and connected dunno the value by the way.

W point - ok but don't know if the IC is damaged, how to measure?

    B & C & Y POINTS - pads are clean and intact.

Seems to have something to do with static electricity coming from the solder iron when soldering B C Y or I point.

Replaced it by an antistatic one to be sure in the future. Maybe one of the controller IC's had become corrupted. Can it be so that the ps2 uses separate lines to control Original and Burned media?

    Test this:
Take one blank media from same pack you're using to burn games.
Burn a region unlocked DVD movie.
    Remove the PS2 mod.
    Try the movie in it.

If it works then the mod is wrong for your PS2 or is causing the reduction of the reading capability of the laser (It may be close to be bad so the chip might make it read worse). It seems to be fine install wise as the unit still play fine the originals.

You can also try the replacement laser as shepd said.

Hm ... usually a PS2 with this kind of weird behavior has some kinky mobo problem like cold soldering on the DSP chip or other things as a broken resistor ... Man, some of these defects can be hairy-scary... Really pretty hard to find even for a experienced technician.

    Good luck with it

    i did that already,

Completely removed the mod to see if the problem persists at playng burned media (DVD movie on burned Verbatim.)

The same problem persists. Original movies play well, burned ones don't

Well than if burnt movies don't play even with the mod out, than it's more than likely the laser. Did you try a burnt movie even before you modded it? I always test now to see if it will read burnt movies before I take it in for a mod. If a quick cleaning, tweaking doesn't get it reading burnt disks, I don't take it in for a mod or I tell them they usually need a new laser before I'll mod it. I've done a few in my early days that wouldn't read burnt disks and I thought it was the install until I started testing with burnt dvd's before I mod. As for your problem, since it's two different versions, and if you're tried different disks, burner, everything, than it's the lasers. I had one burner that wouldn't burn a single thing that was readable on a ps2 or xbox or anything. That burner could read them but that was it.
