DVD-R vs DVD+R (If you are having problems with DVD-R try DVD+R)
DVD-R vs DVD+R (If you are having problems with DVD-R try DVD+R) –

I have been having problems with booting DVD-Rs on my PS2 a 30001 R V5 NTSC (Magic 2R with Clip) burned using my Panasonic LF-D311 DVD R/RAM. I could only get them to work if I:
1. ejected the trey
2. inserted the DVDR
3. tapped reset to close the trey
4. tapped reset again when the trey was halfway closed.
Yesturday I tried DVD+R media and to my suprise they booted
just like the originals first try every time.
I now will be selling my Panasonic LF-D311 DVD R/RAM and buying the Sony DRU500A.
If you are having problems with DVD-R try DVD+R

Could also be the brand of DVD-R media you're using, plus I know the D311 is limited to a 1x DVD-R burn.
You may want to hold off on that purchase as there's no current driver support for the DRU500 in mainstream DVD burning apps like PrimoDVD or RecordNow. Folks are also waitng for driver support in Nero too.
Damn lot of good it will do you to have a shiny new DVD+R burner and no way to burn backups...

I have done a lot of DVD-R and DVD+R backups and I can tell you that on PS2s V5+ or with brand new laser units, DVD+R works a lot better. Reads better and boots first time, everytime.

The brands of DVD-R media I have used are:
Pioneer
Apple
TDK
Imation
CompUSA
They all gave me the same booting problem.

Yoda:
If I'm not mistaken, the Pioneer A104 doesn't write DVD+R at all.
If it does, my mistake, and sorry.
One other thing to keep in mind is that it's rare on PS2s lower than V5 to have DVD+Rs working. They are usually better than DVD-R on PS2s V5+ but older PS2s often can't read them at all, mainly due to the laser unit wear.
My V3 PS2 can read DVD+Rs flawlessly but I only achieved that after installing a new laser unit, since my previous one was having issues reading whatever media I put into it.
Regards!
