dvd drive acting up, any suggestions?
atfer wrecking my first dvd drive in my former v3 pal console with a messiah install attempt it seems i managed to kill a second drive of my new v7 pal console as well when i tried to mount the dms3.
the whole thig is quite weird, though.. first of all, i'm quite well up with electronics, soldering and such things, so i really made sure the new mod will not end in a mess this time.
after all, the whole modding was a very simple task compared to adding a messiah in a v3 console, but still, after closing the console and turning it on it showed the following behaviour:
ps1 originals worked
ps1 backups worked
ps1 imports worked
ps2 CD backups worked
ps2 DVD originals, backups or imports did NOT work anymore, only contant clicking of the dvd drive
this already confused me and i thought it could be some faulty connection or so. after some unsuccessful attempts to fix this issue i removed the dms3 and the problem still occured, only ps1 originals worked, dvd media of any kind refused to work and just made clicking noise.
unfortunately the dms3 was already off the console when my mate showed by and i used his v7 dvd drive in my console -> it worked again. just to make sure i put my dodgy drive into his console (after applying the dms3 mod for him as well) and it showed the same error.
so i'm now quite sure the dvd drive died, but not completely, it just refused dvd media.
the funny thing is (ok, not so funny in fact) that i had the idea to put the laser of my v3 console into the v7 drive as the v3 drive actually seemingly had a broken BA* chip. even with that "spare" laser the drive accepted ps1 originals (at elast for a few minutes) but refused dvd media.
in the end, i'm a bit confused... sure, the old laser might be faulty as well, but with the same symptoms? and how could the v7 drive die at all given thwat the mod was applied properly?
As it's quite hard to get hold of replacement lasers over here (and as they're not quite the cheapest thing to buy if you can) i obviously would be sure a replacement laser or laser unit will fix my console. otherwise i'd have to go for a complete dvd drive, right?
interestingly, i got one more v3 console which is fully operational, but i'm not sure if it's safe to swap the lasers or if the v3 laser could get broken in a v7 console - or are they electrically compatible?
seems like i could at least get hold of plain replacement laser units from a vendor nearby, but unless i know for sure the problem is related to the laser and not e.g. to the spindle motor or so it's simply too risky to spend another 50-70 bucks which might died right after turning the machine on (or turn out not to fix the original problem) ;)
lots of questions, and lots of died lasers ;)
and still a fancy dms3 lying here to be applied to a console ;)
hope someone can help me with these questions.
btw. any chance the lasers are just "disadjusted" in any way? i could surely fix such things if i had more info about how to adjust it...at least i got about every tool required for such a job, just not the required data/specs.
