yeah, so basically it happened, i redid the installation and it continues to happen. It boots cd backups fine, but gives me no data, then RSOD when i try to boot a DVD backup. I can boot a movie using this media but I am unable to boot a game backup. I tried 2 different games, but I haven't tried them on any other systems...but the chances that both are bunk are slim. I would appreciate any help. Thanks a lot.

If it boots dvd movies backup then the laser should be fine for the ps2 dvd backup. Check your installation again. Better yet, reinstall everything. It is possible that it's your installation that's the problem though.

If you have old laser(original), it won't work for DVD games. You need to get a new laser 400c type. DVD movies will work on backup disc without modchip because there is no protection on the movie in PS2.

I go the same problem with V4. After replaced the new laser, it works perfect without problem. Even the old laser is working with the original dvd disc, it 's too weak to work with the backup. This is very common in V1-V4. You can tweak the laser or adjust the dvd pot to make it works but it won't last long. The original laser come with ps2 is kinda picky on the some of the brand dvd disc. You may search around to see which brand disc you need to use. The new laser 400c will work on any kind of discs, I have tested with GQ dvd-r brand(cheap shi.t 0.19 each), work fine.

I think the original laser was B type. You should have bought a C type. C is better than B.
