  1. #1 Question Duo2 se in a v 1/2 GH-004 gap bios (everything works except backups) Please help!

I can't seem to find much info on these motherboards? I havn't had any problems until this modchip came along. I tried installing it a while back with a Canadian tire soldering iron (Very big and crappy) That didn't go to well. (black screen, total blank but it powered up) well I went out and got a Weller 25 watt & a 0.8mm fine tip. and some 30awg wire aswell some 0.6mm solder blah, blah, blah anyways it took me a good ten hours to do it this time, I wanted to do it right. So all said and done I booted her up with Pong for PS1, it started up for about a min then froze. Then back to the black screen of nothing. So I read the forums here for another hour. I fixed up the bios, basically re-did the whole solder job again making sure of no shorts. After a few tries she boots up fine, it plays PS1 games, PS2 games, DVD's, & DVD-R DVD's. Just like a normal retail PS2. But I can't get it to play back-ups, it just goes to the red screen. I checked out the solder points to many times (its making me sick) If anyone would give some insight , maybe which wires are responsible for me to boot burned games, i mean back-ups. It would be greatly appreciated. I do have a bunch of wires crossing right at the mod chip, but I can't see that being the problem. Laser is great too, just watching a UFC I had burned to DVD a while ago. Thanks i'm done now.

I put some pictures of it when I was first finished, but I've almost re -soldered every wire just didn't take any pics (I was a little frustrated, and gimme a break its my first solder job (well I did an xbox once but that was much easier)

V1(GH-004)/V2(GH-005) with bios 110 010 are not supported by some low price/mass market mods out there (Mostly Mars series and similar products)

Keep that in mind when trying to fit these mods on such old systems.

Also the mechacon wires (A, B, C,... I) can prove to be pretty challenging on these machines as the vias run under the mechacon and DSP chip, meaning the only way to tap on the mechacon bus is soldering on it's pins. (By this I mean your black screen problems might be a short circuit on the mecha bus pins...) Take your multimeter on continuity test (buzzer one) and measure A with GND and +3v then measure B to GND and +3v. And finally check b to c, and h to i for short circuit with it's neighbours pins. If there is a short circuit on the mecha pins you will get a nifty black screen.

Btw I own a US V1 with bios 010 (gap type. there are 010s no gap too but they're rare) and it runs incredibly well with a original Matrix mod. I don't know the duo chips so I can't say if this one support the US 010 bios
thought. If you install a mod into a machine and the specific bios on the machine is not supported by the mod you get weird stuff like it trying to boot then going back to browser or just RSODs, regardless of the mod being properly wired or not.

    I hope this was helpful

hint: to indentify the version of the bios on your US PS2 you can do this:

At the browser screen press triangle. A US PS2 with bios 010 will have DVD driver 1.10U. 020 will have 1.20U and 030 will have DVD driver 1.30U. Some V4s have bios 040 with DVD 1.30U (Bios 040 is only seen on GH-013 and V5s) anything up than 020 is well supported by the majority of mods out there.

The Duo works just fine with these models; I have a V1 and a V2 running with this mod. Definitely check those points that l_oliveira pointed out.

I would defiantly recheck the cdvd point (CXD chip) points again. You do realize that a un-modded PS2 can boot burned DVD movies. Also dont count out the fact that your laser might be weak and taking to long to boot the ps2back-up initially and the duo might be timing out its patching of the bios resulting in a RSOD. This wont happen with your DVD movies as there is no protection for the chip to get around so even if the laser takes longer then normal to boot the movies it wont matter. You might also consider trying a PSX back-up as its not necessary to have any of the CXD wires soldered in order to boot a PSX back-up but make sure you put the chip in PSX mode when you do this.
