  1. #1 Question duo black screen
    flypoon Guest
I did an install for a duo chip on a v7 about a week ago. everything went fine for about 2 weeks, then basically, it stopped working. all I get is black screen on boot and the blue eject light doesn't even come on. did I blow a fuse? all the connections are solid. the only thing I'm wondering about is that I used slightly thicker strand wire for 3 of the BIOS pts. because I ran out of wire. can someone tell me what may be happening?

This happened to me once. It was point A that got loose. Check that point and point B also.

Either that or a blown fuse.

A good fuse will read 0 resistance. There should be a diagram somewhere here pointing out all the fuse locations in a PS2 motherboard...

found the fuse. it was the one right next to the BA5815 that blew. replaced it, and it blew again. I guess, the BA chip was bad too after I did the "pin 8" check. when it comes to replacing those, it's out of my league. I was able to remove just the pins away from the board, but the metal thing in the middle is giving me trouble. suggestions?

Sorry, I can't help you with that, never done it myself. But I do remember reading a thread here that contained instructions by the pros about how to remove those chips. It involved heating the points while lifting the chip a little bit and alternately on both sides, unless you've got the equipment to specifically remove chips. Do a search.

yeah, I've done that search. I did find a little info on how to remove a ba chip, but with the ba5815 and the ba666, there are the pins, but there's also this larger metal bracket holding down the chip by its center. I tried desoldering it, but it won't budge. maybe I need a different method because I'm able to remove the pins without a problem. it's just the middle that's frustrating me. thanks for the previous help. It did help me find out the source of the problem, but I still can't figure out how the fuse could have blown in the first place.

I was doing some thinking and the guy I installed it for said he turns the ps2 off by switching off the main power directly without placing it on standby. could a fuse blow if you turn the system off without going into standby?

Well, my siblings sometimes do that on my PS2 and it's still fine, I don't know if doing it everytime makes any difference though...
