No. As long as the chip is installed correctly, modding a ps2 will not affect its ability to read games.

Modding your PS2 does have a little bit or risk, but if you go about things properly then you won't have any problems

    1. - Find the right chip installer - Modding a PS2 isn't impossible, but unless you know what you're doing.... everyone on this board would strongly reccomend that you pay someone who DOES know what they are doing to install it. Preferably someone who will guarantee their work. That is how you can eliminate the risk of irrepairable damage to your console.

    2. Proper installation practice - If you have a V9, V10, or V12, then there are issues with the lasers in these consoles that you should address. Romeo mod for the V9/V10 and Matrix fix for the V12/PSTwo. This will lower the risk of your laser getting burned out.

    3. Use good backup media - Bad backup media will overwork the laser (shortening its life), or even make your backup game unplayable. Visit http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm to find out which media is good and bad

    4. Send me money. - Helping out noobs is hard work... maybe its time you guys sent me a little something-something --- j/k :-) Good luck with your mod!
