I know that the old neo 2.2 damaged the lazer by sending unnecessary signals to the cdvd controller. But that was long time ago. The new clones may fail many times to boot, but do they really damage the lazer?

All chips contribute to laser damage by allowing it to play inferior media types that make the laser work harder to read the data.
More often than not though the choice of CD's and DVD's is more important than the type of chip used when talking laser wear.
