I'm interested in getting a modchip for my PS2, and I was wondering if it's really gonna be worth it to get a DMS 3 over, say, a Magic V chip. What's your recommendations?
Thanks

nickmv: it depends on if you want the features of the DMS3, if you do its worth the extra, but if you don't, then honestly, a Magic V (v5-v8 only) or get a DUO or something else that is cheaper.
OK, also, I heard that my version (SCPH-30001 with U0 serial) wont read DVD-R's. Is this true? If so, what version do I need. All I wanna do is play backups and be able to disable the chip to play online. I don't need anything special, just to be able to play all my backups. I think I may sell this one with a bunch of games on eBay, then go to Walmart or someplace and get a new PS2, then have it modded.

well, yes and no. some of the original lasers kick ass, and some area great with original media. if you use cheap media (BLUE bottom) then those lasers have to work harder, if you use DARK PURPLE media, then the lasers work less. but Dark purple cost more than generic blue discs. Pioneer/Apple/Verbatim use purple (ritek-g04 are purple).
DUO works on v1-v7. You have a V2 unit.
Magic V only works on V5-v8.
if you go any lower then you are dealing with crappy chips like Magic 2 and Magic 3.1 stuff.
I would get a DUO and its less wires to install in that machine.
yeah well mine doesn't read purple's worth shit, so.....i think it'll actually be a good idea to sell this one I have with some games, cuz I'll probly get over 120 bucks, and then hopefully the PS2 will be 150 soon to compete with the xbox. then i'll come out near even, and with a new ps2 that's more compatible. thanks for the advice, i think i'm gonna get a magic v. ALSO, can I determine if I'm getting a version 8 without opening the box?
get magic v...dms have bugs that are not going to get fix till the end of time.
save some cash and get a magic v for your playstation's ass.![]()

Well, regardless of chip cost, get which one you find is the best. You (hopefully) will have this chip for a looong time, so price shouldn't constrain you.
*wispers...get DMS*

Step 1 : Decide what you need the chip for (Play back up games only? play dvd movies? play on-line games?).
Step 2 : Check your pocket
Step 3 : Choose Modchip that best suits step 1 and step 2
Step 4 : Have fun

well i wanna play backups and online games, no need for movies, my xbox does that. is the dms3 required for this new DNAS crack thats coming out? or does it matter? the big deal is, the magic v premod ps2 costs significantly less than a dms3 premod does. what advantages would i have with a dms. and dont jus tell me that i can flash it, as i obviously know that. i'm talking about real world features that i would actually use. thats what m post is originally about: the advantages of a dms3 over a magic v, and if its worth it. im only looking to spend about 130 bucks total, and thats assuming i sell my current ps2 and some games for about 120 bucks.
I hardly belive that it will be still possible to use back-up copies to play on-line games in the coming future.
If this is the main use you want to do of a Modchip than it is better if you wait some monthes and see what will happen.
