Dms 3 V2.0 Problems
Dms 3 V2.0 Problems –
07-03-2003,07:51 AM
Having installed hundreds of mods (going as far back as Neo 4), things have gotten strange today.
We have a new batch of PS2 consoles which immediately looked different upon delivery (Blue writing on box, different packaging materials inside box etc).
Upon opening the console there seems to have been some very minor changes (I'll upload a picture shortly).
The model numbers are SCPH 39003 and the bios has a gap in it
Anyways, as stated above, we have done many installs with very little problems.
Installed a DMS 3 into 1 unit and tested, console powered up then screen went black, thats it, zilch.
Pressed Reset, nothing, tray opens & closes, but nothing happens.
Therefore put the DMS 3 into sleep mode (by holding eject button from standby), come's on again.
Arrrh, bad chip, changed DMS 3, same again.
Opened another new PS2 console and installed into this one, same again.
So installed Messiah 2 Pro into both (leaving all relevant wires intact only adjusting the Reset point and adding clik connection), all working fine?
Whats going on then? Any idea's
It isn't our soldering work as proven above, 2 new (but identical strange new machines) same install as used on DMS 3.

And the Bios on board reads the following:-
(C) SCEI
D 221 060 S48
B 20 080
If this means anything?

I have run across that model here as of late. I didn't notice the gap at first because the pads are still there, there just isn't any legs present. If memory serves correctly, I don't think the Magic chip works in it either as I had a customer send me his PS2 with the magic chip and it didn't work. I threw a Messiah in there much in the same fashion you did, just altered a few wires and soldered in the Messiah and it worked fine. I think this might be the "version 8" that cause the v1.3 Messiah 2 to come about. Does the DMS team have a firmware upgrade for this version or is the chip supposed to support it already?

Hi M8
DMS 3 claim to support V8, and I initially thought them same as you with regard to downloading and burning the new update (currently v1.3).
But if the console won't load (Black screen on power up) there is no way you can update the chip.
As there isn't a external dms 3 programmer the only other alternative is to install one in a older unit (V4 etc) and update it that way, but this would be very time consuming.
So is the V8 here in the UK then? well, its starting to look possible

Apparently the v8 is out and about in my area as well. Personally I don't see the DMS 3 having the firmware upgrade as that big of an advantage to the buyer. If you put it in your system with the chip as it is, which it will most likely be flashed with the lastest version when it is shipped, then it will work at the time. Why would you need to flash it from there unless you plan on putting it in another system in the future? I've only done a few DMS installations with their humongous PCB, and pretty much had to secure it to the only flat part of the board I could fit it (at the top where the board version is printed). I've done so many Messiah installations that I've lost count and I have yet to run into a problem with the Messiah's. I haven't even gotten a dud chip! Then again, the dev.olution mode is nice if you play out or region DVD movies and such. EIther way, until the DMS3 come down in price, I'm sticking with the good ol' reliable Messiah 2.

Hi Brian,
Totally agree with you.
Have removed yet another DMS 3 from this machine and have installed a good old Messiah 2 Pro with no problems and have removed the Messiah 2 Pro and installed the Matrix MXL which is also working 100%.
For a chip of its price (DMS 3), I would have thought it could handled the small changes that have occured.
Whether this is a V8 or not, I dont know.
It does state 'GH 022' on the mainboard and the above on the chip.

Don't think is a V8, we can call it a V7 GH-022 with the GAP bios.
Is almost 3 monthes now that we are waiting for these V8.
I am not even sure that we will ever see V8 in Europe at this
point..... maybe we will jump directly to V9!!

The problem is the wiring......b4 u kick & screem, here me out.If u look at the DMS3 website, they say points D & E i think need to be sepaerated from the rest......i had the same problem....black screen, then i wired points D & E separately & away from any other wiring,& it worked ok.I"ve also done numerous Messiah2 instals,so do this & I'm sure i will find it will work
Let me know how ya go

Tickford is right. Almost all the installers were having this problem w/ the DMS3 2.0 chips. You do have to seperate the D and E wires from the rest and run them together. They cannot cross each other. You can go to the forums on the DMS3 site and you will see plenty of installation examples. They say that this is the most stable chip but I have to dissagree w/ such sensitive wiring.

Too late, we've already kicked and screamed (at the DMS that is :-))
Anyways, having installed approx 30 DMS 3's in V7's I have never encountered a problem until now.
Like most installers, we all have our own way of installing a certain chip and when that works, you do it the same way time & time again.
I installed this DMS 3 no different to previous succesful one's.
However, thankingly, you are correct, I seperated the D & E wire's from the rest and the problem was solved.
Its definatly a 1st but what do they say? "You learn something new everyday".
For a unit of its price (DMS 3), I would have thought that these sorts of problems wouldn't occur.
Anyways, enough of my rambling, cheers for the help, its appreciated highly
