disc reading error

I just ordered a Matrix premod and when I first plugged it in and wanted to see which of my backups were booting. All of them were booting that I put in (about 6 or so) and then I decided to play Metal Gear Solid 3. It booted up fine and I started to play it and it froze on one of the opening movies. I figured it was just the disc so I put in one of the other games that was working before but they wont boot at all just get disc read errors in the browser. I waited about 10mins and Viewtiful Joe 2 worked but when I got to a loading screen on the second level it froze up to a black screen. Then no more games would boot up. I waited another 5 mins put in games they booted to the Playstation-Infinity screen but after that I get a black screen and i here the disc trying to be read but nothing is happening just a load thumping sort of noise every second or so. Could this be the Media? I'm using Ritek G05's at 4x (I didnt know you couldnt burn them at 2x) or is it a problem with the machine then I'll have to mail it back to the chipper. It is a PStwo. I don't think the laser is burnt because he did the pstwo fix on it and there isnt a burning smell at all. Kingdom Hearts backup loaded but whenever it gets to loading after 15mins it takes a rediculus amount of time to load and i hear the dvd trying to load again making the same noise as before. Soul Calibur 2 has worked the longest so far about 25mins until it was loading another fight and froze when reading the disc again.

clean your laser?

whats a good way to clean it? It is a brand new system so I wouldnt think it would be dirty but I'll try anything. Would tissue or something work? Don't want to scratch it.

Only use a cotton swab using 91 % rubbing alcohol. You can get this at a drug store.

what version ps2 is it? it could be the mechacon locked and the coils on the laser fried...

its a v12 but seems like everything is working perfectly after hours of use I guess it just needed some working in.

i have the same problem, but im using swap magic 3.3 so my ps2 is unmodded

first attempts at loading dvd-r game it boots up but couple mins into the game movies would start to skip and the game would take forever to load and or freeze

ps2 is pretty much brand new...... for some odd reason the laser seems to be acting like its worn out pretty badly.....

any ideas?
