    i put a magic 5 in a v7 ps2, it worked fine for cd based games but when i tried dvd's (normals and backups) the disc would spin for a bit, get some clicking going on, the disc would then try to spin backwards with a buzzing sound then it would pop up with a disc read error... so i took out the chip, cleaned up all the points, no wires or anything left in it. still does the same thing with dvd's, it'll play cd's ok just not dvd's now... swapped the laser unit itself with another with the same results. no solder bridges, cleaned with solder wick, and checked under magnifying lense... any idea's?

    I think there must still be a fine hair sized short on the pads on the back (CD/DVD controller points) or on the bios legs....

    either that or a solder ball or splash has shorted something else out...

    no other way to explain it.

    I'll recheck the cd/dvd controller points, use solder braide to clean them again. I know it can't be the bios legs because i used a bios clip kit to snap over the chip itself, no solder had a chance to touch it. I'll search the board again for solder splashes. Thank's for the reply.

    Bios still boots though, I can still navigate through the browser. Only thing that doesn't work is dvd based games. I'll see what happen's when I clean the pads again and search for solder problems.

    just because you used a clip(ick), doesnt mean that the clip is correct. those things can be wired wrong, bend legs on the bios chip, not be just the right size, etc etc.

    clip = crap

    It's the same clip that I used for a Magic 3.1 chip which worked just fine with the same bios points. If it was wired wrong that logically speaking the bios would go out and just give me a black screen, I highly doubt it would still work with cd games and not dvd games like it's doing right now.

    the fact that the clip worked before only eliminates wiring as a possible issue.

    btw, you hadnt mentioned that only dvd games wouldnt work previously, and considering as close together as those post times were, the fact that i walked away after i hit reply to go take a leak might have something to do with it.

    and, it still doesnt change teh fact that clips are crap.

    Actually if you read the first post completely through I state that dvd's don't work and cd's do work.
    ... so i took out the chip, cleaned up all the points, no wires or anything left in it. still does the same thing with dvd's, it'll play cd's ok just not dvd's now...
    <--- from first post.
    I'm not arguing for or against clip kit's, that's not the issue here. The issue is simple, I'm trying to get my system working again. The End.

    yea, but wouldnt you rather have it working with the chip installed? i mean, that is afterall the point of getting a chip.

    so did you check the legs of the bios AFTER you removed the clip(ick...)?
