Disassembling to mod...Need help?
Disassembling to mod...Need help? –
I have a v5 or v6, I am opening up my ps2 to make sure which one it is. I have read tutorial after tutorial on how to open it up, and mine is not doing what it is supposed to! I have the top cover off, I have taken off the Mem cad port and I have unscrewed the fan/power switch screws. Then the tutorials say I am supposed to flip it over and take off the bottom cover. Mine wont come off! I have taken off every damn screw, why wont my bottom cover come off? It is being held down by the lower right corner if the dvd drive is facing you. What am I doing wrong?
There are 3 or 4 tabs on the front, side and rear of the DVD drive, once you have those free you may find the RF shield is still attatched to the board by a couple of thermal pads, lever it up gently and it'll pop off.
Hope this helps.
Forgot to mention, at the optical out port there's a plastic pin that goes through the shield, it'll help if you lift the shield up as square as possible.
Don't forget the large screw holding the shield to the board in the corner of where the PSU used to be.

That confused me somewhat...do I need to have the cover of teh dvd drive unscrewed to see the pads? and what is the RF shield. Thank you.
the RF shields are the 2 sheets of steel encompassing the motherboard.
You don't need the cover of the drive removed.
As you're looking at the rear of the DVD drive, upside-down the tabs are,
2 infront of you,
1 at the back (Where the tray opens)
and one at the back of the left hand side.
Gently pry the shield over the tabs.

Does the top cover have to be off to take the bottom cover off?
Yes, there are the small screws, then there is one large screw, just like the screws that hold the fan and controller units down. The large screw is located near where the fan unit mounts. Take that screw off, pry the top plate off where there are 3 tabs holding it down to the DVD drive, then make sure all of the ribbons are disconnected, and lift up. The bottom shield should stick to the motherboard board because of the adhesive on the thermal pad, just pull it off.
sweet, i got it off
it seems as though i may not be out of the woods yet...how do you get the power eject button off the top cover
