dead ps2 lazer fire smoke ****
dead ps2 lazer fire smoke **** –

Hey guys. I just destroyed my ps2 (well atleast my lazer) while upgrading my modchip.
- No video/audio, but other wise fine (lazer ejects, standby light on like normal, turns on and off like normal)
- The lazer smells like fire/smoke.
- There are no fuses dead(from what I can see)
If anyone has any instructions for me to do next, i would be appeciate it. I have never had to replace or analyse a lazer so some guidance would be appreciated.
thanks in advance

remove the modchip and clean up .
even if you have a fried laser you should get video and audio... so try to get that working before worrying about the laser.

Would it be detrimental to disconnect lazer assembelly from the motherboard and boot the ps2 for testing?

Look for shorts on the bios connections, also ps14 fuse can give no audio/video.

ill check that fuse, and as for the bios points, i did not touch any points on the motherboard at all. the only thing i did was change wires on the modchip side (which makes me wonder why im having this trouble!)

did you replace your chip with the same type chip, if not, not all chips use the same points on the board.

now that my exams are over, i can continue to work on my ps2.
the PS14 fuse is OK. i checked every point the chip was connceted to and confirmed that there are no bridges/shorts.
i removed the chip and cleaned up. when i power up without the lazer connecter i now get audio video, everything appears to be working well.
is it possible to destroy a lazer by connecting it incorrectly to the motherboard? (eg, having a connector not plugged in all the way)

ok just booted up with the lazer conneted. no smoke or any bad signs. booted up a dvd movie, works perfectly.
reinstalled the modchip, and everything *still* works.
now that is a big WTF
i dont understand what was making all that smoke. there is no damadge on the motherboard from what i can see, so it must be part of the lazer.
now to try a cd...
