Dead ps2 laser?!?

MY playstation just started doing the damnest things. I have a version5 ps2 with a dvd 2.6 mod (which uses a neo 2.2) and gameshark to boot games. When I try to boot ps2 backup games it will go through the whole gameshark process, but when it goes to boot the screen will flash and change to an odd looking ps1 boot logo with a lot of japanese writing or it will just switch to the main sony memory/boot screen. I have removed the mod since then and it will still do the same things when I try the knife swap. All of my originals work fine and it will play dvd movies, but just not backups. Did my laser go bad? Or is there a way to reset the playstation settings? Thanks for all help.

What you describe relates to the way the DVD 2.6 mod is or isn't functioning and not the laser, especially if originals play without a problem.

I removed the chip and my backups will not boot with the knife swap though. All of the solder points are clean (I've triple checked). Is there anything else that it could be?

I'm not an expert with any Neo2.x product, but if what you've said is true about all the solder points being clean, then perhaps a component on the M/B has gone south. Sending it to a professional may be your only recourse...
