Dead Laser?

If any of the pro's could help, I will be greatful.
I have a US V5 w\magic2 chip that was installed by Freedomlives in Aug.\Sept. time frame and just this last week it stoped loading anything, only goes to browser.I noticed it does'nt make any noise like it should when reading a disk, so I think the laser is dead.If that is the case where is the best place to get a new laser.Thanks for any help you can give.

have you tried clearing the laser to make sure, im sure it has gone but to make sure b4 you buy another one is to clean it

Just now ran the lazer cleaner with no change.Put a music cd in just to check,browser comes up, if I go into browser it says its reading disk but makes no noise like its reading or searching.Thats a real drag as this PS2 hasnt been used too much or ran for hour and hour at a time.

your ps2 wasnt getting hot by any chance this may cause to blow a fuse

Open it up please and look at the cables going into the side - flat ribbon cables from the disk unit. See if anything is wonky, trapped, damaged there.

Also look at the Magic 2 wires - anything come adrift; anything shorting on the metal casing?

cables from the disk unit look ok.With the cover off I put in a music cd to see if it was spinning and it would only move about 1\6 a rev. at a time, and at that only 3 or 4 times and stop, so definitly not spinning the cd.

so youve seen with your own eye the disc do not spin at all??

if you go to the FAQ section you'll see a post describing how all this works and what it means when th disk onlt spins part way. Saves me writing it all out again.

It can't find the groove that contains the data. So it gives up. That's why I suggested cables. Maybe the laser's phucked. Have another look at the orange cable. Does the laser light come on?

I took the cover of the drive off to check the lazer, with no media in the drive, the red light comes on for a split second, then stops.Also with cover off put media in drive and it wont spin, just as I stated before, moves just a little, kinda like its sticking.
Charlie, I have not doubled checked the Orange cable yet, will do In morning.Thanks Charlie and ps2guy
