  1. #1 Controllers Not Working
    Mike_01 Guest
I have a v7 PS2 here and the controllers do not work. I have checked the controller unit and ribbon cable, which are fine, and have even tried replacing them with brand new ones out of a new PS2. The analog light will light up when the analog button is pressed. None of the buttons work on either controller port. Im fixing this for a friend, and he said only controller port 2 didnt work when he sent it, but when I got it both didnt work. I've double checked the ribbon cable clips and checked for continuity on all pins.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem could be?

    Hi,

I supossed you have checked it already, but if you dont, just check all the fuses to see if there is a blown one, and replace it if necessary.

Get the Fuses list and Images from FAQ

    Good Luck!!

There are 2 X Diodes behind the USB Ports

Are both controller ports Non- functional?
Usualy only one controller port goes but if both are gone then replace both diodes and It will be fixed.

Classic problem also in older PSX Consoles e.g. 5502 & PSone

Only one was not functional ( or so he says) when he shipped it, but both were/are not functional when I got it. I just checked both diodes and they are fine, or so my multimeter says anyways. Do you know of any points I can check for continuity to see if its a broken track? The PS2 was modded before with a Magic and the guy who installed it did a hack job with some clips and scotch tape (yuck). If/when I get the controllers working ill be putting in a DMS3. I already removed the old mod and cleaned up everywhere and it checks out just fine, so just this damn controller issue now.

Can you (psxtools), or anyone else with a digital multimeter give me the readings on those diodes so I can make sure they are 100% working. I tested them onboard and got the usual slight voltage drop you get with diodes (about 0.6) forward, and instead of the usual open (1) I get backwords, I got 1.something which im guessing means its finding a path through the board, with some resistance of course.

Any help would be appreciated. I would hate to lose a good v7 over this.

They both may test OK but replace them anyway

I have found they often read OK with the meter but are faulty

Top diode = Left Controller (Port 1)
Bottom Diode = Right Controller (Port 2)

OK, I guess ill replace one and see if it changes anything. But before I do.. Is there anything unique about these diodes, like do I need to get replacements off another v7 mainboard? Can I replace just the top one to see if the first controller works, or will I need to replace both to be sure?

Also, I dont have any tiny SMT diodes like that. Only ones I have are some big ones (about as thick as 18 awg wire). Would they work?

Sorry about so many questions, I just dont wanna take off a diode only to find I dont have a suitable replacement, hehe.

Also, there is a resistor just to the left of the diodes. Does anyone have the value of that resistor so I can check to see that its ok and not part of the problem?
