Hi as many others I come from the xbox modding realm but am a fresh newbie to the PS2 and was curious about if someone could give me a bsic overview of what we need to do to sucessfully chip a PS2 (slimline) to play backups. Do we need to get an illegal bios or what? and also has anyone heard anything good about the ***4 Pro? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First off, installing a mod in the ps2 requires much more soldering skill than an xbox mod. Think 18-21 wires with points at least as difficult as the xbox d0.
If you're unsure about your ability with a soldering iron, please practice on something disposable before sending a ps2 to an early grave!

Many new ps2 chips are taking the route of coming pre-flashed with a homebrew bios, turning it over to the end-user to decide if re-flashing with backup/import support is legal where they live.

Matrix Team offers official "full version" bios downloads directly on their website.

The Crystal Chip bios releases are open source and free to modify with whatever added support you desire.

Whereas the chip you mentioned invented a fake "hacker group" that magicly compiles a bios from unreleased source code.

The ***4 Pro doesn't really offer much for the new slim PStwo. Their hack hdloader-os doesn't do any good for a ps2 that can't use a hard drive.

My recommendation would be the Crystal Chip because I really like the direction they are taking with their Boot Manager and because it has been shown to work well on the new v12's (slim ps2).

No matter what chip you use, be sure to read up on the issues regarding the PStwo's laser coils and mechacon lockups. summ0ne's solution (one resistor on the tracking points) and the matrix pic (for extra piece of mind) are the most reliable fixes right now.

So if I just bought the crystal chip after I installed it would I be able to play PS1/2 backups right after or would I need to download a bios? And could you plz give me a link to a reliable store that also sells these fixes? Thanks all.

You would need to flash the Crystal Chip with an edited bios.
You can either edit it yourself or download a precompiled version at gamefreax.de.

Many are just using the summ0ne resistor fix which is as easy as going down to your local electronics store and getting either a 560 ohms or 1.8k ohms resistor. I'm not sure about a souce for the pic fix since I just made my own.

Read through the stuck topic about the PStwo laser issues for more info.

Well There is a huge thread on this forum that has the fixes that you can do yourself. I dont really like that one. The neo-xii is better though for a fix. You will need to download a crystal chip firmware from that site. I hope this helps.
