Question for anyone who knows. It seems sony put v4 guts in some PS2's marked with SCPH-30001R NTSC PS2's. Here is the question will this NTSC MAGIC CHIP 2 (R) work on these v4 boards with the 30001R markings.
    Answer I hope so.

If Not There will be some pissed off people when they find out this chip will not work.

Actually, it's very simple to see your board is V5/6(R) or not, just see at the bios, the bios with 'non' gap' and have 50 pin
and if yes, please use magic2 with 'R' version.
but, If you find V4 bios 'non gap' and have a datecode 2002, you can use magic2 'R' version too (datecode can see at BIOS under word SCEA)
You have to open your console to make sure it

I've adapted the below from a post on another forum to help LOD through this maze, although I'd be surprised if he hasn't seen it before.

Quick US/C PS2 Reference Chart in regard to Messiah & Neo4

    [USA] PS2 NTSC

    30001 v1-3 = 10 Screws on base of PS2
30001 v4 = 8 Screws on base of PS2 and Electrical Hazard Warning
30001R v4 = 8 Screws on base of PS2 and Electrical Hazard Warning
30001R v5 = 8 Screws on base of PS2 and Electrical Hazard Warning with three screws in top rim

    of expansion bay

    Serial #
    U1xxxxx: v1 with 10 screws
    U0xxxxx: v2 with 10 screws
    U2xxxxx: v3 with 10 screws

    U0xxxxx: with 8 screws the PS2 is v4
    U3/U4/U5/U6: v4 with 8 screws

    Model 30001
    u1* w/ 10 screws = v1 (PT11*******)
    u0* w/ 10 screws = v2 (PT10*******)
    u2* w/ 10 screws = v3 (PT12*******)

    u0* w/ 8 screws = v4 (PT10*******) (date code 1c have problems with neo4 & messiah mods)
    u2* w/ 8 screws = v4 (PT12*******) (date code 1c have problems with neo4 & messiah mods)
    u3* w/ 8 screws = v4 (PT13*******)
    u4* w/ 8 screws = v4 (PT14*******)
    u5* w/ 8 screws = v4 (PT15*******)
    u6* w/ 8 screws = v4 (PT16*******)

Date Code on BIOS chip under word "SCEA"

    Model 35001
    u5* w/ 8 screws = v4
    u6* w/ 8 screws = v4

    Model 30001 "R"
    u1* w/ 8 screws = v5
    u3* w/ 8 screws = v5

    Summary

    look for model 30001 PT13, PT14, PT15, and PT16, and model 35001 PT15, and PT16.

    Avoid model 30001 PT10, PT11, and PT12 and model 30001 "R"

Here is the thing. People that know how to tell what board they have will have no problem but the people that blindly order chips just beacuse they have a 30001R and get this Magic chip2 (R) and have a v4 board will be greatly dissapointed. I am allready getting calls on this and I have seen many of these R PS2's with the v4 board inside.

The V4 is divide in 2 type : Gap and No Gap
The gap one is purely "V4" type, just use MAGIC 2 "V4"
The problem is the "No Gap" one, the contain of the bios (32M) is divide in 2 type:
    - 1st : real "V4" like the Gap one
    - 2nd : "R" type like the V5-V6 Type of bios.

Temp. conclusion of V4 No Gap :
    - Look at the chip beside the bios :
If the chip was CXD 2950R then the bios must be the "R" type, just use the Magic 2 "R" (like in SCPH 30000 schematic).
else if it was CXD 2942 BR, you must use the "V4" type of Magic 2 "V4"

so, it seems like You have to opened your console first before ordering modchip

You have a previously highly desireable v4-1A and can use any darn mod chip you chose (Neo4.x, Messiah-lite, Origa, Magic Chip 2, etc.) Prior to the release of the Magic Chip 2, v4-1As and 1Bs were worth their weight in gold a short time ago as the 1Cs and 30001 Rs were real problem children.)

The Magic Chip 2 is a very good choice and LOD is just the man to see that it goes in without a hitch...
