Clicking sounds during startup on magic2 V5
Clicking sounds during startup on magic2 V5 –
01-25-2003,12:58 AM
My magic 2 v5 NTSC/U is make "clicking" sounds almost everytime I power-on the PS2. (no games/media inserted)
It does go into the standby mode after some clicking/grinding noise.
Is it the laser?
I am not sure if it's the "clicking" sound everyone else is talking about here, but mine sounds like a grinding noise.
From searching around the forums I see that most PS2s have the clicking noise during loading a game, but my ps2 does that when I first power it on, press reset, or sometimes loading or during a game (mostly on the Sims).
I've been having this problems ever since the clicking noise started when I was playing the Sims (paradox). I powered it off, waited for 15 mins, then when I turned the PS2 on again the clicking noise was there again (without any game inserted).
Now my installed was done at a local gameshop (I live in BC, Canada). So I took it down there yesterday and they took a look. When I returned today they said they think it might be some power-on switch on the mainboard that is busted
They don't think it's the laser. They also said they don't have the parts to fix it and I would have to take it to sony and get it fixed myself..... but I though sony doesn't fix ps2s even for a fee if it has been opened.
I've tried cleaning the lens with Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol but it did not do anything.
I can't clean the lens with the lens cleaning cd because my ps2 would not read it.
Also I've tried audio cds on it and the songs always seem to skip.
I've never had any problems on my PS2 b4 I played the Sims on it. Can one game actually screw up my PS2?
Please help me I am desperate and don't know what to do....
Sometimes when I press reset a few times or leave the ps2 for a while the the problem is gone.
But sometimes it's there....

as charlie has pointed out somewhere in the forum use the search function for this whats happening is on of 2 things either a cog has lost a tooth which would cause the grinding or the microswitch that resets the laser is not being pressed so its driving the laser towards the spindle you can.

Where is the microswitch and where is the cog?
I only know how to open the top half of the ps2.
Do I need to open the bottom to check these things?
Thanks !

you need to open up the laser housing to get to the micro you will find it just below the spindle.

Did you use the Search button on CLICKING - there is a very detailed piece I wrote. And when you open it up and take a look you'll see the microswitch.

Yes charlie, I read through your post on clicking noise booting DVDRs with M2s.
But I am not quite sure if my ps2 is having the same problem as stated in that post since my clicking sounds occurs during start-up of the ps2 into the browsing screen and booting any type of games (dvdr, cdr, original), not just booting dvdrs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Well I took it to a shop to get it fixed ($35 canadian). Yeh ^.^
He showed me a long black "nail" that is broken.
I assume that's the microswitch coz that guy is chinese and I couldn't actually confirm it.
Is that what the microswitch looks like?
