    hi all,

4 da ppl who dont remember my last post, i recently got my v5/6 ps2 chipped with a messaih chip.however, it couldnt play dvd-r backup of ps2 games. i got a new laser and just instanlled it(khs400c brand new).

however, i still got probs, the laser keeps clicking when tryin to read the ps2 dvd-r game and then goes to the red screen. i've tried adjustin the laser angle using the screw and the white cog to no luck, cleaqned the lens but no luck. tried diff brand media but no luck.

Until recently, i burnt gta vice city on dvd+r and it worked. load flawlessly and lighting fast all the time.

    1) anyone know why this is??
    2) will using dvd+r have any advantages/disadvantages to using dvd-r disks?
    3) also, my ps2 won't start up form a cold boot unless i reset the console first. is this a fault or just due to havin the ps2 chipped with messiah.
    4) will dvd movie backups on dvd-r work?

CHEERS TO ALL WHO HAVE HELPED ME!!!

    Clicking Laser - not booting
The laser apparently cannot see a good eye pattern - it apparently cannot focus on the groove. Assuming that the laser lens is clean and the laser diode is not weak, then it is possible that the CD/DVD Controller is unable to report having seen a good eye pattern. Check connections A through I for bridges.

A sensible check would be to boot the PS2 with no disk inserted. This will bring up the browser. Select "browser" and "no data" displayed. Now insert a disk for example a DVD movie and wait to see if the laser unit recognizes the disk as a Video. If it does, you will see "VIDEO DVD" at the upper right corner of the screen. This demonstrates that the unit can recognize a disk which is a good indicator that the CD/DVD Controller is probably not bridged.

    Perform this check:
    1. With the modchip in and if it doesn't work ...
    2. Check it with the modchip fully removed

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

That is a troubleshooting guide for the Magic chip.

Although the points are different I'm pretty sure the reason for clicking noise is the same. Whoever installed that chip for you should check over his work. Or maybe you can do it. Don't go checking for "A-I" points. I think the Magic modchip is different from the Messiah diagram.

So yeah, just check the soldering again for any bridges or poor connection.

I'm using a messiah also, and have had a similar problem. I think it really depends on what burner you're using, and how you're using it. I had an ISO and tried burning it on my new Lite-On burner on my desktop. Nero 6, good settings, 4x DVD+R burned at 2.4x and 4x, but the game would never boot. Just clicks. But, when I burned the ISO on my laptop's TEAC burner, at 4x, with Nero 6 (same settings), using a +R from the same spindle, it booted just fine.

Almost the same thing with CDRs. The CDRs from my Lite-On will play, but the PS2 constantly clicks around, seeking. Same ISO, same CDR, same burning program, but with my TEAC burner, that combination provides for smooth sailing.

    Beats me.

Remove any of the devices plugged into the USB ports, try that.
