I have a v7 ps2 with a magic 3 installed, it reads cdr's and original ps2 store bought blue back cds perfectly. But will not read dvd store bought games, like madden 2003. We have used a oscoilloscope to chesk the lasers pot settings, The dvd is not coming back with any kind of pot signal (eye signal) at all. We find that by turning pot has no effect in voltage. But we have also noticed that the turning of the pot on the cd is not changing the eye sygnal(it just goes in our out) is this the way it should be ?. do you have any idea of what the problem could be? Oh also we put another laser on the board so its not an install problem. Thankx for any time you spen on me man
easy the actual diode situated on the laser is dismounted from the ribbon its a 16 intergated dye khs 400c diode it needs resoldering back to the ribbon its a factory production fault its easy to acess just dismount the laser from the sled rails just at the side of the caliper adjustment screw you will find it resolder these 16 points and your problem should be solved its not registering eye pattern signal because the test line is disconnected from the ribbon causing the eye pattern to be constant unclipped for the cd protentiometer and the loss of signal for the dvd protentiometer hopefully you have not turned the pot by its threshold and burnt it out.
I'll punctuate EnTiTy's useful piece to make it more understandable.

cheers charlie never been one for grammar im just a lazy git
You are beyond salvation, Dust! No wonder you went to Canada for your hols. The frog speakers would have just about been able to understand you!
thanks guys but I have a couple more questions first the diod hasa plastic cover over it and I dont want to hurt anything so what is the best way to get it off?
2nd:how can I tell if I have burnt out the laser?can I only burn out the dvd side because it will still read cds and I am getting the red light what is that telling me or is it not telling me anything I am geeting pot readings on the dvd and cd with a mutimeter.I am just not sure how to tell if it is bad .
thanks guys you have already been life savers!!!
I think EnTiTy is in the brain surgeon league where you might be the sawbones. No offence meant - but that is intricate work - more so than the BIOS legs.
Get a pro onto this if you have worries.
