I have a v4 & v7 I can't get to boot dvd-r.
CD/CD-R games boot but not DVD/DVD-R
It is likely that one of the following causes applies:
The W wire or the R may be incorrectly connected.
The laser lens is dirty & should be cleaned with a cleaning disk or a cotton swab. The DVD is read at a higher frequency than a CD and results are more sensitive to a dirty lens.
The laser needs re-calibrating because of wear and tear. This is a complex process separately described in an FAQ article.
The laser needs replacement because of severe wear & tear.
On v5/v6 models, the CLK wire needs attention as per a later article in this guide.

I'm about ready to give up !! on these I try w1 still no boot up on
dvd-r both on version v4 & v7 .Does the same on differant media.
Goes straight to red screen .neither console has been played hardly any. Works fine on ps1 cdr & ps2 cdr .

You have confused me at least. Is this Messiah 2?
DVD-R doesn't play
DVD Silver does play?
So unless you know the DVD-R works somewhere else, I'd suspect the DVD-R whether or not different media. The Silver behaves the same as DVD-R for chip purposes.

magic 3 is the chip , what I meant was silver back dvd =orginal ps2 dvd's play great in both console but will not play dvd-r.The media I'm using work great in my v5 machine
