Alot of the modchips I saw ( back in the day ) had one extra wire that needed to be attached in order to play PS1 backups .... You can still get chips ( very cheap I might add ) and install a new one to get you to where you want to be ?![]()

Those old chips die, just put another modern chip and thats all.
In 90 models problem is that SX and Y cables arent connected, cause they are PS1/CDs signals.
Conect that to play ps1 games.
Use perfect 8x backups to play CDs, your tracking bobbins will thanks to you.
Lubricate optical drive annually.
