    Hi, hope I can find help here!

    About late 2009/2010 I got a modded Slim PS2 from a web shop called mod shop place. They did real good work, got the system quickly and were real helpful.

    I don't remember the chip they put in, I thought that maybe it was a Duo 3 Ultra Chip. Well flash forward to about two weeks ago. I haven't played much of my modded ps2 due to playing ps3 and work. Well when I put in any kind of PS1 game nothing booted. Just gave me the red "Please place ps2 or ps1 disc" message. I then realized I needed to hold down buttons on controller 1 to boot ps1 stuff.

    After some trial and error I found out that holding X and O while pressing reset made it boot up all my ps1 stuff. Then I tried my PS2 back ups.

    Nothing I tried worked. I knew the disc I was trying to use worked before but this time it just showed the red screen.

    I emailed the place i got the system from but he can't remember all the boot codes for the older chips since they now install newer ones that do instant booting. I tried every button combo I could think of but the back ups wont boot, I even re burned the games thinking maybe that was the problem but nothing happened. It can play regular R1 PS2 games but no backups or import PS2.

    Here are the button codes I tried and what they do (or seem to do)

    X + O = PS1 mode

    X + square = nothing

    X + triangle = nothing

    O + square = nothing

    O + triangle = nothing

    square + triangle = nothing

    X + R1 = nothing

    O + R1 = nothing

    Triangle + R1 = nothing

    Square + R1 = nothing

    X + L1 = nothing

    O + L1 = nothing

    Triangle + L1 = nothing

    Square + L1 = nothing

    Triangle = goes right to memory card screen

    Select = Screen goes black. If I put in a regular PS2 games, it boots up after a moment, but a back up or import, nothing happens.

    Start = Disable chip (screen goes black and the words "Disabled" appairs on screen)

    R2 = Boot from ELF

    L2 = Boot from HDD

    If anyone can tell me if they could know what chip has these codes and maybe what I need to press to go into PS2 backup/import mode I would be very thankful!

    Open your PS2 and take pictures.
    Its impossible to adivinate.

    Try pressing only square.

    Yes, that message will appear for any disc that the mechacon (CDVD controller) can not recognize as a valid PS1 or PS2 original. Though it can be fooled by modchip trickery, this is still subject to full readability of the discs.

    I then realized I needed to hold down buttons on controller 1 to boot ps1 stuff.

    Good. At least something works like it should.

    Then I tried my PS2 back ups.
    Please clarify if these are all previously tested, or newly made and untested.
    Also tell us the type and quality of the discs used and how they were burned.

    Nothing I tried worked. I knew the disc I was trying to use worked before but this time it just showed the red screen.
    This can happen even with a perfect modchip, due to differing laser characteristics, aging discs, and especially with low quality discs or those unsuitably burned. (Very low and very high burn speeds are equally bad, for various reasons.)

    I emailed the place i got the system from but he can't remember all the boot codes for the older chips since they now install newer ones that do instant booting.
    Or so they say, maybe trying to convince you to buy yet another one...

    I tried every button combo I could think of but the back ups wont boot, I even re burned the games thinking maybe that was the problem but nothing happened.
    But here we run into the issue of laser, disc, and burn quality again. All of which we know nothing about until you tell us.

    It can play regular R1 PS2 games but no backups or import PS2.
    So did you test pressed original imports too ?

    Triangle = goes right to memory card screen
    One interesting thing to do there is back out from that menu to where you can see an image of a disc displayed, which should also indicate the disc type.

    Select = Screen goes black. If I put in a regular PS2 games, it boots up after a moment, but a back up or import, nothing happens.
    Please be precise! Do you really mean that nothing at all happened, or do you mean that a boot failed with the 'red screen'.

    Start = Disable chip (screen goes black and the words "Disabled" appairs on screen)
    This might be useful for cases where a game is protected against modchip use.

    R2 = Boot from ELF
    AKA: DEV1 booting. This is very useful for booting homebrews from MC

    L2 = Boot from HDD
    AKA: DEV2 booting. Same thing but from internal HDD.
    And here you should please clarify if you have such a console, and its precise type code.
    By that I mean the SCPH-xxxyy code, where we want the 5 numeric digits xxx and yy (Model code and region code).

    If anyone can tell me if they could know what chip has these codes and maybe what I need to press to go into PS2 backup/import mode I would be very thankful!
    You need to realize that you may already have used the right combo, but with a disc that your console might not find readable. (Even if your last console could read it.)

    You should also consider the possibility of using other methods to run your games than by using physical CD and DVD discs. The current game loader OPL is excellent at loading games both from internal HDD and from a LAN-connected PC or NAS unit. It can also use a USB drive, but there the transfer speed of the slow USB interface of the PS2 becomes a real problem.

    Best regards: dlanor

    Sorry it took so long for me to respond, I been busy with work.

    I opened up my PS2 and found out I do have a Duo 3 Ultra installed.

    To answer your questions dlanor:

    1) Please clarify if these are all previously tested, or newly made and untested: These were both previously tested and new burn. The system I got at one time did play my PS2 back ups but like i said in the OP I didn't play it for a good long while. Neither the former working burns or the new ones worked.

    2)type and quality of the discs used and how they were burned I used both Sony DVD-R and Verbatim DVD-R. The burn programs I used were Clone DVD, Imgburn, ISO buster, and Alcohol 120. tried different speeds, none worked

    3)So did you test pressed original imports too I don't have any import Ps2 games, the only imports I got are Ps1

    4)Please be precise! Do you really mean that nothing at all happened, or do you mean that a boot failed with the 'red screen'. When it is a PS2 backup, the screen stays black, no sound or anything, regulars PS2 game the screen flickers then game comes on, PS1 games (reg, backup, import) just black screen

    5)DEV2 booting No I dont have a older PS2. it is a slim SCPH-90001. I had an older "Fat" PS2 but the "no sodier" chip I tried for it bricked the system.

    I'm thinking that either the chip is messed up (looking at the soddering on the chip and board they look more yellow than they should, but don't want to mess with them in case they break) or maybe something with the laser (but again, system isn't too old and I barely used it!)

    I hope this info helps some. May look into other things, different burn methods for this before either giving up or buying another pre-mod

    Is a hardware problem.
    Just check bios points for a shorcut.
    Check the wires are well soldered.
    Clean the mo-bo softly.

    If you want to try, remove voltage and ground cables from chip, that way you can start the system without any obstruction. If it boot, needs another chip.

    Please post good pictures of instalation.
