I have an old Messiah 1 chip on my V5 PS2.
It has no problems playing movies that are DVD9 but I read a long while ago it doesn't boot DVD9 games.
Is this true and if so, why doesn't it boot DVD9 games (or DVD+R9) from a technical point of view?

I got the Messiah 1 back in Jan 2002, that was when it was released so its not a fake or a clone.
I have Magic 3.0 and it plays DVD9 movies but not DVD9 games too. Unfortunately I do not have an answer for this question I'm seeking myself also. I think it's the lens getting weak but likely requires a newer modchip.
If anyone knows if it's the lens or modchip problem, please reply. Thanks in advance.
buy a DUO2 if your strapped for cash, if not, a Matrix Infinity should fix the DVD9 non-booting of games problemMagic3.1 had a big problem with this as well.
My pal v5 with messiah 1, wont play champions of norrath DVD9.
I tried via AR2 and via the psx1/dvd boot mode - nothing worked.
I did read somewhere that psx mode was meant to work, perhaps I was unlucky.
Well my PS2 recognizes a DVD 9 game ie if I put MGS2 Substance in ARMAX Evo, it automatically loads the MGS2 Substance codelist but the game won't boot :/
I also have a v5 with a Messiah 1. I got GT4 today and it worked fine, but after taking a rest from it, I couldnt get GT4 to boot anymore, after 30 mins of trying.
Was I lucky? Does Messiah 1 work with DVD9 games??
I believe so, but I'm not sure. I have a v4 with a Messiah 1 and I am able to play the Guy Game without any problems.
I have a v3 with messiah1, i can play both xenosaga (original) GT4(original import) and MGS@,3 so i guess it works![]()
