Hi,
I will be buying a new PS2 - are there any versions that are difficult to modify that I should look out for?
I'm not sure if/what chip I will use, but most interested in Magic 2/Messiah 2.
Thanks,
Shawn

You might want to check out the buy/sell forum here, lot's of them sell premod for $300, good price.
well, if you're going to buy a new console, or a premod, get a v5/v6. they tend to have a more reliable laser. watch out for those v4Rs though. Look for SCPH30001R on the sticker outside of the cardboard box with any datecode, except for 1c. c'ya![]()
LOL Oh come on, ian. Wake up, eh? Sometimes I wonder why we bother....Originally posted by ian

Either you've never read the News page or somehow you just refuse to actually believe we have the Messiah 2 running perfectly in a 30001R 1C (v4R-1C) to have made a silly statement like that.
Um... so, just out of curiosity, which is it...?![]()
From what I've heard, V1-V4 is fairly difficult to mod yourself. V5 and on are much easier. Messiah 2 is the way to go, in my opinion, and works on all US NTSC models except V1, (and they're working on it)!
Why not just get a v7? isn't that the newest always the best???
I have a v7 with XO-2 chip on it and it plays everything I throw in. DVD movie, PS1 original and backup and PS2 original and backup. I assume that v7 with messiah 2 would be even better than my combination.
IMO, if you are getting the direct boot modchip like messiah 2, magic 3 or 2, or XO-2, version doesn't really matter. If you are planning to get other kinds of modchip, then it really depends on which modchip you are planning to get. BTW, there are only two versions of brand new PS2 in US, either v5(30001R) or v7(39001). I doubt you can find any older version brand new.
Most likely you won't even see a new V4 for sale (unless you live in the END_OF_THE_WORLD or at XBOX-Land).
If you're gonna use a Messiah2, then choose what version you like (v5/6/7 are the easiest). otherwise, if you want to use Magic2, you should get a v5/6 ,because the v7 still has some DVD9 issues unsolved.
I don't know yet if the Magic3 fixed that issue.
So just don't buy a premod v7 with ANY chip other then Messiah2,
and you'll be fine.

Any console is easy to mod regardless of the chip... Here is the secret...Originally posted by Prognon

Me - "www.freedomlives.com Hey Bill, I would like to schedule a time to have my console modded. I have the __________ chip."
Bill - "Sure thing not a problem, drop it by or send it on ________ and I will have it back to you ________."
Its that simple unless you are a 2M tech who knows what you are doing, or you have $200 bucks lying around that you dont mind giving to $ony for a new console...
