Bought a MI... –
1. How do I know if it is a clone, and...
2. Do I really need all that stuff that the manual says you need. Manual
3. I've soldered before and found it quite easy as long as I take my time... should I still find someone better?
if its got an actel chip its genuine... what type of soldering are you talking about?? using a flat tip or a 0.2mm tip?? ;D
If your good, all you need is the iron, solder, wire and some device to strip the wire with. If you know you can make mistakes (a lot of people do), you should also pick up some desoldering braid..
It indeed has the Actel chip on it, and as far as I can tell, looks original.
So all that flux and special wire isn't need then?
special wire? you need 30AWG wire..
Flux is needed for hard to stick places. All these materials (including an iron, solder, wire -30AWG "Wrapping Wire", flux paste, and desoldering braid) are about 16 bucks or so at radioshack.. probably less.
The Matrix team's site has good suggestions on all the equipment you need
-22-to-26 gauge wire. Needed for the 3V and ground point connections. I pulled
the wire out of some bad network cables. No need to buy this. Pull it out some
broken electronic stuff lying around.
-30 Awg (wrapping) wire you can get 100ft for ~$7.99 or 25ft for ~$4.00
25ft should be way more than enough, but you might want to get extra if you
plan to do more mods in the future
-15 Watt soldering iron, small tip. Rip-off Shack (Radio Shack) sells them for ~$8
but you should be able to find one for about half that if you check around at
hardware/electronics stores. In Radio Shack's defense, their 15W iron with the
small tip does fit in the hand well and works very nicely for a PS2 mod. 30W is
probably a bit more heat than you want to have around the PS2's more delicate
-0.32 diameter light duty solder. Lighter = melts much more readily = easier to work
-Solder flux (get non-corrosive/non acidic). ~$3 The only place this REALLY comes in
handy is if you use the side of the motherboard as the ground connection (as most
mod installers do). Other points are small enough to where it doesn't make much of
-Sticky tack+Safety razor blades. ~$6 Some people use this for the chip pin leg
solders, but I think its more useful for when you have to solder points to adjacent
pads/vias. These aren't necessary, but can give you a degree of freedom on tricky
points. See if you can borrow from someone or an office supply room.
-Wire strippers/cutters ~$9-11. Good strippers are CRUCIAL for the 30awg wire
since its so thin. I also use it to cut the tinned ends of the wire down if i get too
much solder on them.
-Multimeter. If this is your first install, there is a fair chance that the chip/install
won't work the first time you try it. A multi-meter will help you check your points
and help diagnose solder bridges you might not be able to easily see. Borrow one if
you can. If you end up buying one, get a digital one for ease of use/operation.
-Xacto/knife/blade used to scrape the light plastic coating off of any caps that you
will have to solder to
-Tape. Electrical tape to INSULATE THE CHIP and SOLDER POINTS (something i forgot
to do on my first install), and some kind of double-sided tape to hold the mod chip
in place. Light duty tape is best in case you have to move the chip for any reason.
-Tweezers. Not absolutely necessary, but very helpful for holding the wire for tight
-Bananas. I've heard that this is a surgeon's tool-of-the-trade. Its the potassium. Anything with a lot of electrolytes in it will help you keep your hand steady.
-Static free, well lit workspace. Somewhere COMFORTABLE since you'll be spending a few hours doing this. Preferably close to your TV so you wont' have to move the PS2 very far to test it out. Make SURE to at least put it in the bottom case any time you power it on (another mistake I have made). Also, dont' touch anything metal inside the PS2 while its on if you have the top cover off (a friend of mine made that mistake).

Insulate the chip... please explain. And where do I place the chip after I connect all the wires.
One more thing, is there are place where I definitely shouldn't hot glue the wires to?
BTW, I couldn't find 20 AWG solder... smallest I could find was .062
Same for the 30 AWG, smallest I found was 26 awg, which was phone wire...
if you go to radioshack, they call it wrapping wire. It's not actually considered 30AWG wire.
.062 solder is good.
I would avoid using hot glue altogether. Its messy and hard to undo if you screw it up. Electrical tape will hold the wires in place just as well with less hassle.

I would put the chip to the first open space on the board left of the bios chip, as shown in the attached photo (not pretty, but it functions). That location gives you the shortest possible ground wire and is pretty centrally located with respect to all the other solder points. To answer your PM question, my ps2 is a v7... which are known for good lasers and ease of installation
