Tried installalling a Messiah 2 Pro v1.30 (w/cut track) into a v4 but for some reason couldn't get it to work correctly.

It recognized DVD, DVDR, and PS1 CD & CDR. However it would not play PS2 CDR.

Additionally, the PS Logo was mess up when games booted. The background behind the word "Playstation2" was a grey rectangle. Anyhow, I couldn't tell if this was a problem with the chip, the install, or the PS2.

I tried installing & uninstalling several times. Same Problem. Then I decided to try swapping the chip out with the Messiah 2 Pro (v1.07 w/out cut track) in my personal PS2 (which I know is a good install from months of use).

Well, after just swapping the chips, I now get the Black Screen of Death (BSOD) on my v7 PS2. No electrons, no sound. After searching the threads, I read this may be a fuse and/or BA chip problem.

I've since removed the Messiah 2 and all the wiring in my v7 PS2 and still get Black Screen problem. I've checked all the fuses with a multimeter and they all appear to work (ie, when I touch either side of the fuse with the meter, there's continuity).

    My questions are:
    1) Does anyone have any idea why I would get BSOD?
    2) How do I test if the BA chips are fine or fried?
    3) Are there any other places on the board I should look for damage?
    4) Anyone know where I can get some BA chips? or a v7 Mobo? How about a good hotdog?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Here's some answers to your questions:

    (1) The BSOD can be due to quite a few things, but the most common are the flexible ribbon cable going from your eject/reset switch bank to your motherboard has been damaged or isn't connected properly.
Blown surfacemount fuses (but you've cleared these as being faulty).
But mostly, shorts between pins of IC's or wires in the wrong spot.

    (2) Unfortunately there is no easy way to test if a BA chip is faulty.
You can check to see if it runs too hot, but apart from replacing it outright, there's no way to be certain.

    (3) Look mainly at your DVD decoder points (B to I) and bios connections for shorts between the pads and/or legs.

    (4) BA chips can be purchased from PSXRepair, but a new motherboard is another matter.

I've never delt with PSXRepair so I can't comment on how reliable they are.

Thanks Relayer. Tried the ribbon cable first. Mine tests fine with multimeter. But I swapped it out with another working PS2 just in case.

Still black screen. I'll go over the whole board tonight when I have time to look for shorts again.

If that doesn't work, I'm not sure if I want to replace chips. Do you know which BA chip would need replacing, or could it be both/either of them?

For $30 a chip, I may just have to cut my losses and buy a new PS2. The drive tray opens & closes and spins upon bootup.

    Hi

The last 2 motherboards I repaired with BSOD had bios pin shorts.

These shorts could not be seen with naked eye nor with magnifier.

Test the bios pins with multimeter where the wires were soldered to.. you should not get continuity (short).

Hi usafa...Try this after checking all the soldering points.
Reset the consoloe many times repeatedly, this unlocked some ps2´s i´ve worked with.
That´s a bios problem, most of the times. (some likely happens with psx or Ps one)
    Hope it be useful..
    Bye.

Thanks Nighthawk. I'd try that, but I've since gotten rid of my PS2 and bought a new one.

Thanks ITMaster, but I won't be needing it anymore.

I work for PSXrepair.com and would like to offer some advice. If the PS11 fuse has blown and you get a blank screen when powering on the PS2 the problem is almost certainly the BA5815 IC needs to be replaced, we supply them here.

    Hope this helps, Mark.
