I just installed the Magic 3.1 chip in my PS2 (v5) and now my backups boot to a black screen. I saw that I was supposed to use a thicker wire on the ground. Is that true? Has anyone ever hear this before?

    Please help.

    thanks

yes you should use thicker wire on the power and ground (atleast 24aug) 30aug for the rest , however that is not causing the black screen , most likely you have a solder bridge on the bios (wires m-r) but check everywere .

I've had a black screen and it was ONLY because of ground (and more than once). The reason I tell people to start with the ground wire is that its an easy piont to troubleshoot. Make sure this piont is as short as possible (10cm MAX).

You should also have a larger wire (22ga) for the power.

and now my backups boot to a black screen
Does this mean that you see the opening screen, and the PlayStation 2 Logo. And then it hangs?

If this is the case check your timing wires for length and make sure there flat on the board and not crossing other wires. For the magic 3.1 the timing pionts are A and R.
If it is booting (or wants too) it could be a bridge in the BIOS chip. Those are pionts M-V.
