cut away at the la untill u see metal solder to that
Thanks for the suggestion loy! I would have never thought you could do that. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes...
Just tried cutting away at the LA, but it seemed as though I was going nowheres with it, so I've removed the entire LA chip and I think I've got a dead v9 with a good LA chip in it that I'll try removing and putting into this machine (which is a v10).
Does anyone know of a source for LA chips (or replacements)? I need something that doesn't require the original LA chip to be in place.
Thanks again
I used a dremel tool to sort out the problem you have. A customer brought over a SCPH 5502 PSX a few years ago when he attempted to do a colour fix on his console and broken the pin of the video encoder chip. I used a small silicon carbide (83702) grinding bit and used this a cut away the encapsulation around the broken pin. Did a very good job. It cost me a small fortune the Dremel tool at the time but has been worth the money spent and the use I have gotten out of it. And I might add a good tool for case modders to :)
Dremel on a PS2 motherboard?! Careful!
Thanks for the input fatcat.
I've actually ripped the dead LA chip out and tried putting a different one in from a v9 that I had sitting around. I got the disc to spin, but the laser seems inactive.
Ive been searching the threads here for a replacement LA chip. I know I saw in one thread a while back that someone posted a link to a site selling something that looked like a BA chip on a flexible circuit board which is soldered in place of the LA chip. Anyone know what the heck I'm talking about? Or where I can get them?
Thanks again
Just posted a more detailed explanation in another thread... thought I would include it here as it's relevant...

I just did a v10 yesterday with a Duo2SE and it worked like a charm. Although I had one Saturday that messed up on me - but I'm thinking it may have been because I had the SCEX line connected to the wrong point (DOH!) or a problem with the Romeo mod.
I tested this v10 out first, and everything booted fine. Then I did the Romeo mod and when I first fired it up, I wasn't getting any disc spin. I tore the PS2 apart again, and double-checked & resoldered everything and it worked fine after that. I was thinking that maybe I had a bit of a solder splash or something around Pin17 on the LA chip (but I don't think so - this was the only explanation I could think of). The coils on the laser were fine as well.
So after making sure the PS2 was booting everything fine after the Romeo mod, I went about installing the Duo2SE chip. When I booted the machine up, I had no disc spin again. Right away I had assumed it was a problem with the LA chip (because of the earlier problem I had). After double-checking all of my connections (especially the bios & vias connections), I had noticed that I had the SCEX line on the wrong spot. I moved this and still had the same problem (forgot to mention that somewhere in there the Eject wasn't working either). I eventually tried removing the LA chip (and modchip) and fitting one in that I had from a v9 that I was pretty sure was good, but it still wouldn't work. The disc would eject again and I had disc spin, but it wasn't reading anything. So I'm left to conclude that the LA is fried - probably due to something I had done during the Romeo mod, although I'm sure having the SCEX line on the wrong spot didn't help things either...

Anyway... I'm still looking for that replacement LA... :)
*edit* - two seconds after posting this I found something which is sort of what I'm looking for: hxxp://richspsxparts.com/psx2.html
I'll probably order up one of these and see if it works. But I'm still open to any other suggestions or if anyone knows of another place where I can find something like this.
*yet another edit* - found another place: hxxp://worldmodchips.fateback.com/ps2.htm
Good thing I had these bookmarked on my PC at work here. Anyone have any feedback about these things?
