Hey I have a v.4 ps2 and im trying to put in a messiah2. I have been trying to get soldering to the cd/dvd chip down but its just impossible so i went and looked into soldering to the alternate via's and ive been practicing on my old dreamcast and i think im going to give it a go in a little bit. But first i wanted to here what others think about this alternative method and i wanted to know if its ok to put a gob of hot glue right on the solder points to secure them down?
Its best to remove the clear coat on the pads before soldering. You can lighty scrape with a razor blade being carefull not to damage the pad or tracks then flux the pad and pre-apply some solder to the pad before attempting to solder the wire to the pad. If the wire is soldered on corectly NO hot glue is needed just don't man handle the wires you can use a piece of tape to hold wires down
I use the alternate points on v4 all the time, but I only use the ones that would normally go on the legs of the cd/dvd chip. Works a treat everytime. Use LOD's method for best results.

Solder A B C H I to the top of the mainboard and D E F G to the bottom
I got a v4 and used only alternative vias for the cd/dvd rom controller. I did in a really wacky way to prevent troubles down the road and it paid off recently. I put H and C at the alternative point near the center of the board. All the rest A, B, D, G, I are at the points under the cd/dvd rom controller chip. Now the pay off I recently had wire H pop off and due to my setup it was impossible for it to contact one of the other wires and kill my ps2. So far my Magic 3.1 is a dream chip and works perfectly on cdr, dvd to cdr rip, and dvd9. Good luck.
When i soldered on there the wires would bend they just poped off.
