Another limiation of DUO 3 chip in PS2 Slim

I found another limitation of DUO 3 chip installed in a PS2 Slim (70012) just now. When you want to play PS2 backups, the following two boot methods works fine:

1. Open the lid of PSTwo, put in the PS2 backup disc, close the lid, press reset button to turn on the PSTwo.
2. Open the lid of PSTwo, press reset button to turn on the PSTwo, put in hte PS2 backup disc, close the lid.

However, the following approach won't work for sure:

3. Keep the lid of PSTwo closed, press reset button to turn on the PSTwo, Open the lid of PSTwo, put in the PS2 backup disc, close the lid.

A red error screen will always appear if you use method 3 to boot PS2 backups.

Is the above behavior common for other non-DUO3 mod chips ?

hmm, that should work without problem. You sure it isn't your install? have you put a 1k resistor between ground and pwr?

well its not like thats a huge deal anyway. Just press rest again.

Why are u complaining about that its a nice stable chip.

From the sounds of it the reason is obvious!!

It has an Autoboot feature. If you power up with no game in the drive it will have no idea which mode to start in... It probably starts in PS1, disabled or DVD movie mode when no media is detected.

This problem would also occur with the ICE chips one would think.

That is why I would say you need to hit reset once you put a game in - so that it can auto boot into the right mode - makes sense - needs to initialise itself each time based on the media inserted....

To gamecubesuxs: I agree that DUO3 is a nice stable chip if one only wants to play backup PS2 games. Actually I'm happy with it considering its price.

I just want people to get well informed about all the pros and cons of DUO3 before making their installation decisions. There were many discussions in this forum on the pros of DUO3, but not enough discussions on the cons (the only two cons I knew when I bought my DUO3 were a. no region free DVD moive playback and b. no dev mode)

After I installed my DUO3, I found two minor problems in three days. 1. Erroneous video output in PS1 mode. 2. the PS2 booting problem in this post. I agree that I can live with these two flaws, I won't bother to replace my mod chip because of these two flaws. However, I must also agree that if I knew DUO3 won't work well in PS1 mode, I would buy a different chip (maybe modbo ? ). I want to play the homebrew NES emulator on PS2, and unfortunately there is only one homebrew NES emulator on the internet and that implementation only works in PS1 mode.

PS: I got my DUO3 from gamecubesuxs and I'm very happy with his service (fast response, fast delivery) and I highly recommend to do business with him.
