alternatives to Magic 3/Messiah2 for Jap v0
alternatives to Magic 3/Messiah2 for Jap v0 –
Got an interesting email from a vendor who was listed as an official reseller of the Magic 3 chip on the china-magic webpage.
They, despite being an "official" retailer of the Magic 3, do not stock the Magic 3JP version, but instead offer to sell an Axe 2.0 which they claim is compatable with a Jap scph10000 model and developed by the same Magic team. Suppose to have all the functionality as the Magic 3. I have never heard of the v2.0 of this chip, although I've been able to get little info on the original Axe 1 in my research. Anyone ever heard of this Axe 2.0 chip?
Also, what's the story on the "Messiah Magic 3" chip? Is this a Magic 2 clone? Vendors claim this is a no swap mod for all Jap PS2's. In my search, haven't been able to find much on this chip other than some compatability charts. Local PS2 mod shops in Seoul, Korea appear to be carrying these and installing them in premodded latest v PS2's (Korean models are same as Japanese). They've claimed they have had excellent results with this chip. Unfortunately, they don't have the specific one for my old scph10000! dooh!
On the otherhand they have offered to do a trade in deal on my vintage v0... While its still pricey, wondering if this might make sense (get a newer version PS2+ comfort of a professional install, + someone nearby to go after if things dont go well...).
While I consider myself a good solderer, the more I look at the mainboard and Magic 3/ Messiah2 install instructions, it sure does look like one big a pain in the arse...
What's the going rate for modchip installations in the US? Moving back to US soon, so trying to decide whether to get this all done in Asia before I head back.
All I can say is that I have here in my hand a Messiah 2 that works in the Jap 10000. I know a good man in Chicago who does Messiahs for around $60.
yeah just wait for messiah 2.. all those other ones are kinda iffy.. I believe axe chip was a origa clone.. and I do the installs for 40 ^_^
Thanks Charlie. Yeah, after nearly a week of researching modchips for a Jap 10000, my head is about to explode at this moment... plus given the high grades the original Messiah has received and the fact that you guys have already tested the M2 on Jap v0, guess common sense should tell me that I should just wait out the extra week for the M2 to come out...
Another question for u Charlie since ur in tight with this modchip market. After all the presales of M2's in late Nov, what's your guess at which way M2 prices are going to go, say in December? Do get a feel that there is gonna be a glut of M2's and competitors being pushed into the market? or do u think they might be run in short production to keep supply tight?
Can you post or email the info on the Chicago reseller. email at email@example.com
By the way, great forum you got here! Luv'ed that thread which ended up being a short "inside" history of the Ps2 modchip... great read...
