I recently acquired a v7 ps2 from a friend. Theu unit powers on via reset button just fine. however when i press eject, the light will not come on for 5 seconds. while it doesnt come on/eject, i hear strange sound coming from the drive. after a few seconds, the drive finally comes out. It wont read anything. any idea how to fix something like this?

Would a brand new dvd assembly fix the problem if i cannot fix the drive?

I don't think it is dvd assembly related. As alredy suggested check the flat wires first and if they seem ok than it is probably a BA problem.

Thank you for all the suggesstions. Turned out, the ps2 was owned by a smoker who didnt take care of the system AT ALL. i opened the top cover and saw soot and ashes all over the thing. the grinding noise was in fact the laser not moving as villasg suggessted. cleaned it off, put some gear oil on the racks and everything is running completel smooth now.
Thank you for the help and replies. PS2 for 50 dollars. cant beat that!
