Advice: Purchasing/modding old V1-V3 console
Advice: Purchasing/modding old V1-V3 console –
A friend of mine wants to purchase a PS2 and have it modded.
I have found a guy selling his 30001 R PS2 for $100, but I know that
the V1-V3 consoles are the oldest ones so I was wondering:
How wise is it to buy an older console and mod it for playing backups?
I am primarily concerned about the laser giving out.
Also, if your advice is to NOT buy the v1-v3, then where can i find used v5-v8 consoles for a decent price? (~$100, Gamestop = ripoff with their $140 used consoles)
Actually, some 30001Rs can be V4s as well. V1-V3 are typically harder to mod, since the motherboard is like half the size of the newer revisions, alternate points are hard to find and most mods involve soldering directly on fine pitch chip legs.
Other than that, they are no different from any other PS2 equipped with a KHS-400B laser; which means that their lasers will wear out just the same. I have a V2 PS2 that I modded some time ago with a DUO2 and a KHS-400B laser and it's still running great.
One piece of advice though, when I installed the mod, I didn't remove the motherboard because of the hassle involved, so I just removed the bottom cover and got to soldering. Truth be told, of all the installs I've done, the V1-V3s have the shortest wire runs.
